Criminology, here, seems to mean the study of criminal methods, rather than criminal law and means of apprehending criminals as we might suppose on Roundworld. This could use explanation and taupé would seem to refer to his hat (being made of real hair, mole or similar, and shinier than average; see CNRTL).
