Hmm. 17000 feet (3.22 miles) over ten hours doesn't sound that punishing. Not much over what the average middle-aged guy should be doing several times a week to keep his arteries open. I was doing the the three miles in about 45 minutes, although I've gotten out of shape again now. --Old Dickens 16:13, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

The source seems to be Wikipedia (which denies the point that the energy was wasted). One illustration shows a steep slope, but still, over a day it doesn't seem as arduous as many hard jobs, penal or not. --Old Dickens 22:39, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
