In the Johnny Maxwell series, Slate is the nearest big city of any importance to the Blackbury/Newtown/Grimethorpe conurbation.
In Johnny and the Bomb, Slate is cetainly important enough as a target to be allocated a very large amount of searchlight and anti-aircraft gun capacity.
