I've usually seen illustrated and assumed that the procrastinators spun on a vertical axis. This seems intuitive and puts most of the stress on the bottom bearing which can be buttered quickly by the attendant. {{NW}}, however, mentions the set Lu-Tze uses in Ankh-Morpork which "look like your grannie's mangle".
