I think I read somewhere that 'underneath the arches' was were Roman seamstresses did their sewing and hence fornication. Presumably old Latatian seamstresses did the same thing in the same place.

That seems to be the connection. Other definitions of fornix are also tangled. One might have considered something about putting buns in the oven (fornax), but no... --Old Dickens 22:55, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
