Eric found it among his grandfather possessions when he took over the workshop after his grandfather was killed trying to summon a succubus.

It has been suggested the title might refer to “the single eye of all diabolical evil”, which could refer to the Eye of Sauron from JRR Tolkien's books, or it could possibly refer to the single red eye of HAL9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey, or it could even refer to the glowing screen of a computer monitor.
