Is this another subtle little dig at writers of slashfic? I sincerely doubt it, seeing as the book was written in 2001 before the genre became popular in the mainstream. I know it's existed since 1970s, but it wasn't highly popular with people outside of, well, specific circles until the mid-2000s. And the term 'Rule 34' in that sense did NOT exist in 2001.
