Sounds like Terry's been either to Cornwall or North Norfolk or both! Thinking of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blakeney,_Norfolk| Blakeney] here: in mediaeval times a seaport that rivalled London, but which progressively silted up to the point that it's now a backwater village of about 1,000 people with its former coastline having moved a mile to the north owing to silting and consequent mudflats - only a few channels remain allowing for smallish pleasure boats. Half the houses are owned as holiday homes by affluent Londoners and the native Norfolk population have a hint of "Deliverance" about them...
