Must be one of those coincidence thingies, but the sketch has a marked resemblence to the (younger) comedian and Goon Show founder, Michael Bentine.
Can't see a link, though. Although a parellel is that Bentine dropped out of the Goon Show after the first two series because it was structurally too messy and cluttered, with four gifted players struggling for a share of a half-hour's radio time. Pruned to three principals with more space to develop their characterisations, the show ran for another ten years. (Rumours persist of a major falling-out between Bentine and Milligan over the show's direction, though). Interesting that Bentine's principal alter-ego in the Goons was an eccentric nobleman with the wonderfully Discworld name of Osric Pureheart...
So perhaps a very minor character who in another universe might have flourished in the Discworld needed to be killed off, for broadly similar reasons, and to fulfil the narrative causality implicit in his name? --AgProv 09:23, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
- Is it me or do we project our own intentions upon anything we purportedly are seeking for meaning within? Bentine wasn't in my mind at all when I drew this. In fact it was based on a picture of a very different actor, although changed so that you couldn't find the original, seek'st though thou mightily. From a misconception has sprung forth a very well of metaphor and deduction. It's the same in the English lectures I give: the students are desperate to find metaphorical meaning behind, for example, Wordsworth's daffodils. The idea that he was actually looking at a field of daffs in the Lake District that he loved has never occurred to a manjack of 'em... I'm not saying their ideas (or this one) are without merit, but sheeesh! --Knmatt 21:33, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- ...but you annotate yourself. --Old Dickens 22:42, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
I know, I wouldn't have dared put something as distant and tangential as this down as an annotation - that's pushing it way too far - but the chain of causality in my head still needed to be worked out to see where it led.... it's a sort of free association, really, chain of consciousness stuff! --AgProv 22:51, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
