Used by Wizards to detect the levels of magic in an area, the thaumometer is pocket-sized and shaped like a cube, with a dial on one side. It is incredibly valuable, but that doesn't stop one being carried about by one of the Faculty at times of crisis. It measures the amounts of thaums in the atmosphere. Ponder Stibbons's, presumably the norm for handheld thaumometers, goes up to 1,000,000 thaums. Older wizards shun this device, simply licking their finger and observing the octarine glow.
