A couple of notes:
Neither Madam's Gardens on the Mapp nor Lady Roberta's common honorific is spelled in the Quirmian fashion, as far as I can find out.
The mapp was published in 1993 (its book page should be punched up, too), about nine years before Night Watch and the first mention of "Madam"/Lady Roberta.
Wasn't the original mention of a restaurant, perhaps Agatean, maybe in a Death book? I haven't found it, of course.
The mapp shows the building facing on to Treacle Mine Road with another entrance on Gleam Street, backing onto but not in or on Easy Street. Lady Roberta "bought the old house in Easy Street". --Old Dickens 01:49, 18 January 2011 (CET)
Location 85 on The Streets of Ankh-Morpork is indeed as you describe - but the whole of the property is flanked by three streets, including Easy Street. (no marked gate or door, I agree). Again, that interesting expanded map in the front of the hardback edition of Night Watch is a potentially useful check. (Is it in the paperback?) Here, the whole of the property, which is depicted as being open to streets on three sides, is obscured by a label saying "Madam's Gardens", although it is just about possible to discent the two marked entrances.
Then there is Vimes himself, on being released after interrogation by Madam, and able to think straight as he hasn't just been concussed by the Agony Aunts this time.
Vimes stepped out into the rainy night and shifted his weight from foot to foot, and then took a few experimental steps. "Corner of Easy and Treacle Mine. A mix of flat-top cobbles and old bricks. Yeah." (Night Watch hardback, UK edition, p195) He could have gone out of the Treacle Mine gate, but this doesn't rule out a third, perhaps more discreet, door on Easy Street: from context in the text, Vimes appears to go straight out into the street from the room where he was being questioned. --AgProv 16:21, 18 January 2011 (CET)
I agree on the superfluous "e" in "Madam" and will correct!
"Wasn't the original mention of a restaurant, perhaps Agatean, maybe in a Death book? I haven't found it, of course." - are you thikning of the Curry Gardens, which are on Blood Alley, just off God Street and therefore a fair way further Hubwards by Turnwise from Gleam Street? --AgProv 16:56, 18 January 2011 (CET)
- No, no confusion there. Madam's Gardens is at the same corner, of course, but the problem remains that it was included in the Mapp from some reference nine years or more before we heard of "Madam"/Roberta. TP has tended to overlap books and even presage characters and events two or three books beforehand, but nine years sitting on a mention is a stretch. --Old Dickens 19:16, 18 January 2011 (CET)
In the original edition of the Discworld Companion, though, Terry does mention "the Pit", the accumulation of notes and fragments and ideas and odds and sods of unused Discworld material that he keeps as it might come in handy sometime. So you never know... and damn, there's another of those expanded Mapps, this time of the city centre, in the endpapers... just off to edit at least one more article in this new light...--AgProv 12:51, 19 January 2011 (CET)
