''Samothrace'' was the Greek name for what later became ''Scythia'', noted in Greek histories for its horse-archers and which is thought to be the starting-point of the Amazon myth of fighting warrior women. Located on the Black Sea in what later became the USSR, it played host to Mongols, Turks and latterly Russia's fighting Cossacks.<br />
