Mrs Glowbury was a kindly and homely woman who served as cook to Reacher Gilt. She was fond of his resident Igor who saw the signs of a Mad Marster, reasoned that the equivalent of a howling mob with torches and pitchforks would soon be beating the door down, and advised her as he left to make haste in claiming holiday leave to visit her sister in Sto Lat. Igor was equally fond of her, admiring her skilled way with livers and kidneys and other miscellaneous organs (and Igors are not usually impressed). Her current wherabouts are unknown but it's a safe bet that a woman with her talent for savoury pies would not be long out of work.

She should be slightly worried that Vetinari knows where she lives and what she does for a living. Grace runs a pet-food shop on Pelicool Steps and in her spare time appears to have an inexhaustible passion for all kinds of general knowledge trivia. As one of only five people in Ankh-Morpork who could confidently and correctly answer the question "What is, or are, Pysdxes?" (the others are Vetinari, Drumknott, "Puzzler" of the Times and the Curator of Ephebian Antiquities at the Royal Art Museum), Vetinari is concerned that somebody with a mind like that might not just be content to run a pet-food shop. Therefore she is under observation...

As an aside in UA, we learn that there is a possibility that Grace Speaker and "Puzzler" of the Times are now one and the same person. At least, Vetinari appears to have deduced so.

In UA, she briefly employed Rudolph Scattering, but he left after three days because the way the kittens stared at him gave him nightmares. The world can be very cruel to some people... Vetinari's mild obsession with her intellectual ability extends very clearly into UA as well. Are we being set up for something here?

In SN, we learn that she is still vexing Vetinari with impenetrably fiendish and obscure crossword clues and that she is in fact a native of NoThingfjord.

In RS, the word is lagniappe1: not too taxing, at least for anyone familiar with Genua, but it seems to provoke a change of puzzle-setters at the Times. Can one accuse a graduate of the College of Assassins of poor sportsmanship?

1 Literally a small bonus, a little extra to make the deal, but taking on the suggestion of a bribe.
While Lord Rodley, Lady Brenda's son and current ruler of Quirm, has been described as a fat and rather stupid young man, Brenda Rodley is a small, elderly but very active lady who spends much time on the breeding of swamp dragons. She is commanding but not imposing, nor is she arrogant. She introduces herself simply as "Brenda Rodley", and one can figure out her position only by looking at the address on her card.

One of her closer friends is Lady Sybil Ramkin, another swamp dragon breeder who lives in Ankh-Morpork. Her Grace Brenda Rodley has a brief appearance in , where she takes care of the dragons in Lady Sybil's house because Lady Sybil is temporarily busy with something more important than the dragons. Lady Brenda couldn't understand what could be more important than the dragons, but she came to help anyway. (The more important thing turned out to be Samuel Vimes, then Captain of the Night division, Ankh-Morpork City Watch.)
Usage

The "<tt>title</tt>" option should be for displaying the same text as the article's title; "<tt>name</tt>" should list the full name of the character.

The "<tt>books</tt>" option is meant to contain only the books the character features in. Only use series if the character features in all books in that series. For other appearances and mentions use "cameos".

When listing more than one book, use the <tt>&lt;br/&gt;</tt> tag to display the items as a vertical list.

The "<tt>photo</tt>" option is to be used in the following way: just add the file name of the uploaded picture, a pipe (|) and the picture caption. For example: Teatime.jpg|Mr Teatime. The rest is done automagically.

Firstborn Daughter of King Verence of Lancre and Queen Magrat, and heir to the throne. "Note Spelling" was included as Mightily Oats, the priest officiating over the naming ceremony, was unfamiliar with local practices, because her mother Magrat didn't want a repeat of her own name, and due to the fact that Nanny Ogg was standing behind him, with bad intentions on her mind. The last point, in retrospect, would make it seem that adding "Note Spelling" was understandable due to the circumstances. Her first name, Esmerelda, is often shortened to "Esme" as she was named such in tribute to Granny Weatherwax, whom Magrat asked to be her godmother. Her naming took place in Carpe Jugulum, and she was involved with many scenes of the novel - because Granny Weatherwax could not hurt a child, no harm fell upon her from either her or the Count de Magpyr.

In TSC, it mentioned that the King and Queen have since had a couple more children, making Princess Esmerelda a big sister.

When first encountered, Verence was a Fool at Lancre Castle working for Lord and Lady Felmet. He is actually quite tall, but bandied his legs and pranced in a half crouch so that he appeared to be a small man. He has a runny nose, a strong dislike of custard and absolutely no sense of humour. This is because he was educated in the Fools' Guild, to which his abusive grandfather sent him as a child. Verence's father ran away from Lancre long ago; Nanny Ogg refers to his mother, one of the Beldame family from Blackglass, in the past tense, implying she is deceased.

He befriended Magrat Garlick one day, and this was the start of a rather unusual relationship, even for a Fool, in which both people were too embarrassed to discuss their situation. However, when Verence was elevated from a Fool to King of Lancre by Granny Weatherwax in response to Felmet's reign of oppression, their relationship continued to escalate into true love, although due to the large amount of embarrassment, nothing ever happened to advance this. However, a letter from Granny Weatherwax whilst abroad with Magrat and Nanny Ogg caused Verence to arrange a wedding. The wedding was scheduled for Midsummer's Eve, and on this particular occasion the Elves broke through, capturing him.

Soon freed by the trio of witches, Archchancellor Ridcully, and most of Lancre's population, Verence married Magrat. By the time of CJ they had produced an heir, Princess Esmerelda Margaret Note Spelling of Lancre (later, in TSC, it mentioned that they've since had a couple more children, making Princess Esmerelda a big sister).

After inviting a group of vampyres to his castle he was bitten, but thanks to some nourishing brose from the Nac Mac Feegle Kelda Big Aggie he was soon up and about again.

William de Worde was his correspondent in Ankh Morpork.

Boffo is the science of meeting expectations. Witches use it a lot. Missing expectations by a mile can be quite startling, and if it's Granny Weatherwax doing it, terrifying.

A self-appointed committee led by Letice Earwig has formed to organise the Witch Trials. They feel that Granny should give way and allow someone else a chance at winning the trials. Strangely, Mistress Weatherwax acquiesces and is nice about it. In fact, she goes around being nice to everyone. Nanny Ogg tries to dissuade her, to no avail. ; B'Daan? Kraa! D'Kraga ha'ak! : An expression used by a Dwarf officer in T5E on first seeing Cheery Littlebottom in unambiguously female clothing. Given one meaning of "ha'ak" below, it appears that he is expressing conservative disapproval of her dress sense.
; bura'zak-ka : town hall
; b'zugda-hiara : Lawn ornament. (A killing insult in Dwarfish; however, it is used in WS as a term of endearment for Hwel. In RS it is used as an insult for the Deep-Downers, and as a picture for what certain narrow-minded parochial people would reduce the Dwarf race to, if they were to be allowed. Dwarves can do metaphor and simile, then...)
; Dezka-k'nik : king. Literally, "Senior Mine Engineer".
; d'harak : (all peoples who are) not-dwarfs.
; D'kraha? : an expression of astonished disbelief (in context in T5E)
; draht : a distinguishing tattoo used by Deep-Downers and inadvertently by Samuel Vimes
; D'rkza : not a proper dwarf ()
; drhg'hgin : an adjectival clause used for emphasis - as in, "it is also important to know when not be too drhg'hgin clever by half."
; Gd Tak 'Gar : "The Things Tak Wrote" ()
; G'daraka : after buying each other from their parents before their marriage, the couple is in the state of g'daraka: Free, unencumbered, new dwarfs.
; G'hruk, t'uk : evening, all. (Lit. "Felicitations to all at the closing of the day")
; Ginnungagap : a previously unrecorded phrase first used in RS. In the context, it may be cognate with Tra'ka! (below).
; grag : A loremaster, teacher, a judge, an elder in the community. The nearest thing Dwarfs have to a priest, whose social position is much that of a rabbi in a Jewish community.
; G'rakha : an essential rite which must be done with the correct degree of ha'lk
; Gr'duzk! aaK'zt ezem ke bur'k tze tzim? : Good day! What is all of this that is going on here?
; Ha'ak! : A most coarse expletive. In context in T5E, a most disapproving and pejorative term used to denote a Dwarf female who has <del>fallen</del> <ins>risen</ins> from grace (ie, uses makeup, wears a skirt, and brazenly lets her ankles show): a word with the power to incite near-genocidal anger in certain hearers. ()
; Ha'lk : what a Dwarf does to correctly fulfil the obligation of the g'rakha
; had'ra : stop ()
; Kra'k? : an interrogative. "What is that?" seems to be a good translation, in context. T5E
; Kruk : Dwarf mining law.
; K'zakra : a rite of passage all Dwarfs must undergo. This suggests k'zakra is a lifelong journey for the Dwarf.
; P'akga 'a'p'akaga-ad... : It is the thing, and the whole of the thing.
; Sh'rt'azs : Cheery's true name, expressed in Dwarfish. It is, apparently, a literal translation.
; Ta'grdzk!? : an emphatic interrogative used by a Dwarf officer with a battalion of axes behind him to back up his point. Untranslated in T5E, in context it appears to convey impatience and an inability to accept idiots gladly.
; T'dr'duzk b'hazg t't! : "Today is a good day for someone else to die!" A battle cry, and apparently the worst or one of the worst it is possible to utter in Dwarfish, as (according to Carrot, at least) once it is said someone has to die.
Dwarves can do metaphor and simile, then...)
; drhg'hgin : an adjectival clause used for emphasis - as in, "it is also important to know when not be too drhg'hgin clever by half."
; G'hruk, t'uk : evening, all. (Lit. "Felicitations to all at the closing of the day")
; Ginnungagap : a previously unrecorded phrase first used in RS. In the context, it may be cognate with Tra'ka! (below).
; grag : A loremaster, teacher, a judge, an elder in the community. The nearest thing Dwarfs have to a priest, whose social position is much that of a rabbi in a Jewish community.
; Ha'lk : what a Dwarf does to correctly fulfil the obligation of the g'rakha
; had'ra : stop ()
; Kruk : Dwarf mining law.
Death is the anthropomorphic personification of death on the Discworld. He appears as the traditional Grim Reaper, with a skeletal body, a black robe and a scythe (or sometimes a sword for royalty) and talks in unquoted small caps. Death appears for the first time in the first novel, The Colour of Magic (though it is suggested that his first appearance was actually that of his 'stand-in', Scrofula), and reappears in all of the stories that take place in the Discworld universe, with the exception of The Wee Free Men, a Tiffany Aching young adult book, and SN.

Death is fascinated with humans in general, and as a result attempts to emulate their behaviour, if only to better understand them. However, as an immortal skeletal being who does not have to pay heed to fatigue or even time, he seems to lack comprehension of some human concepts, such as detective novels. He is also described by Susan as someone who would solve world hunger, not by changing socioeconomic forces, but by giving everyone a good meal. While his job and anatomy cause a lack of emotions which he displays in his hollow voice, Death can be quite passionate about life in general; in some cases, he actively defends it against the depredations of the Auditors. Death is fundamentally incapable of forgetting anything, with the possible exceptions of 1) how the horse moves in chess, and 2) how to get drunk.

Death had an apprentice named Mort and an adopted daughter named Ysabell, who later got married and left him to become the Duke and Duchess of Sto Helit. Sometimes he visits Susan Sto Helit, his granddaughter through them. When not out and about, Death lives alone in Death's Domain with his manservant Albert and, since the events of Reaper Man, the Death of Rats. Also members of the household are the famed pale horse, named Binky, and at times Quoth the talking raven.

He is fond of kittens, Binky, Susan, Albert, curries and life (without which he would be useless). He strongly dislikes the Auditors, whose machinations against life he considers to be cheating, and at times has seemed to resent Rincewind's unpunctuality, though at other times he has seemed more amiable toward him. Death occasionally finds it tiresome when his work entails dealing with irregularities, such as finding an appropriate posthumous destiny for Mr. Tulip or the repeated resurrections of Scraps. Nevertheless, he sticks by his Duty and very rarely interferes in human affairs, because of The Rules. He has, however, been known to persuade Susan to act in his stead, not always by straightforward means; she occasionally reflects that he may have learnt a bit more about human behaviour than he lets on.

While of course in a sense he is there for every death, he need only personally attend to relatively few in order to keep things running. Death is however a caring individual and likes to keep an eye on things he does not necessarily need to, sometimes to the extent to be present at the end of a tiny tube worm on the abyssal floor. He gets quite upset when people (mostly those freshly severed from their bodies) accuse him of killing them. He argues that he simply allows them to leave this world and enter the next, and empirical evidence (such as the results of his various voluntary and involuntary sabbaticals) seems to bear this out. His jurisdiction, so to speak, appears to be Discworld itself; he is not Death in the universal sense.

Every living individual has a book in the great Library of Death, and an hourglass-shaped lifetimer in a cathedral-dwarfing room that exists solely for the purpose of housing them. The look of each one seems to be personalised, and they keep on writing themselves or pouring sand through until the associated person dies. The books remain; the lifetimers apparently pop out of existence and new ones appear in their place, as a new life begins.

Death also introduces individuals to The Desert from time to time. Each soul has to walk the desert - to what end, Death refuses to be drawn. There is no justice, there is only him.

While Death himself cannot be seen by most individuals, (with the exceptions of cats, children, witches, wizards and other anthropomorphic personifications,) unless he wants them to see him, he is unable to see beings that are truly deathless, as they are not subject to his "power". He has nothing to do with them and thus cannot see them. This reflects that most humans cannot see him, as they naturally do not think about dying.

He was there when the first proto-life faded, and has been given his general shape by the belief of humans - of all creatures the most afraid of dying and the most likely to have evolved an agrarian culture in which scythes feature. He is also still there at the end of all things, as evidenced by his appearance at the end of time and space when Astfgl arrives to destroy Rincewind. Death is just about to metaphorically turn the lights out in the universe when he sees a new one germinating. Eventually, he thinks, there will be life. And therefore death. He will be needed. He can wait.

Death is a servant of Azrael, the 'Death of Universes'; an entity of enormously unthinkable scope and size, "the Ultimate Reality". Azrael is the Being from whom all lesser-Deaths are mere reflections or aspects.

Appearances
In RM Death is forced to retire by the Auditors, who fear he has become too human. He assumes the name Bill Door and finds work on Miss Flitworth's farm as a farmhand. When the New Death is formed, it comes to claim Bill: he outwits it and destroys it, then resumes his role as Death.

In H we find that Mr. Teatime has devised a plan to kill Death, though no details are given, and he is skewered by Susan with a fireplace poker before he has a chance to execute it. His dialogue in the Tooth Fairy's castle suggests that he intended to strike Death with his own sword, which is reputed to be able to cut anything.

He has one of what Albert calls his 'fancies' during the events of SM, and tries to join the Klatchian Foreign Legion where he is called Beau Nidle, fails in his quest for forgetfulness, and repairs to Ankh-Morpork to drink too much, all to forget what he is and has to do. He ends up as a member of the Canting Crew, with the unusual moniker of 'Mr Scrub'. Beggars seem just as invisible as anthropomorphic personifications.

Death has a major role in Mort, Reaper Man, Soul Music, Hogfather and Thief of Time. As a member of the Four Horsemen of the Apocralypse, he plays an obligatory role in Sourcery and Thief of Time.

Annotation: the birth of Death
In the Richard Dimbleby lecture, broadcast on Monday 1st February 2010 on BBC1, Terry revealed that at the age of four at his grandparents' house, he got to see the classic Ingmar Bergman film The Seventh Seal and therefore one of his earliest childhood memories is the defining game of chess between Bergman's death and the knight whose soul is in limbo: "...the Grim Reaper did not seem so terribly grim...the image has remained with me ever since."
First dwarf member of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, hired under the first steps of Lord Vetinari's "special hiring procedures", at the same time as Detritus (a troll) and Angua (a werewolf), both of whom have since risen in the Watch.

Cuddy was Detritus's first partner on the job. For the interest of doing better on the job and making the most of the partnership, Cuddy taught Detritus how to count in tens instead of twos (troll normal counting is in fours, but Detritus only managed twos). Cuddy also constructed a special helmet with a fan to cool the troll's impure-silicon brain so that he could think better (see Detritus and trolls for an explanation on troll brain physiology). Carrot Ironfoundersson (then Corporal) conscripted many men, trolls, and dwarfs into the Watch (or Citizens' Militia as it was called in those times of unrest), and Cuddy and Detritus looked poised for rapid promotion to manage the new recruits. Sadly, in a few days, Cuddy was killed on the job. It wasn't his fault. He was still new at being a Watchman, while the miscreant was an experienced killer. Cuddy, therefore, was the first dead copper in the modern Watch.

As a newly-deceased dwarf, Cuddy argued with Death on his arrival in the afterlife. Having died suddenly and unexpectedly, normal funeral custom had not yet been applied and Cuddy was aware of the total absence of any funeral weapons with which to defend himself against any entities which, while dwarfs might not believe in them, might have an inconvenient belief in dwarfs. Cuddy folded his arms, planted his feet, and refused to go any further until he had a weapon of some sort, as was his deathright. It is understood that Carrot, aware of his foster-race's traditions, obliged by ensuring Cuddy had exactly the right sort of weapon to take to the grave with him...

It is said on the disc that the span of a person's life is not measured by how long they lived but by their actions, some of which continue after their death. For many years after his death, the helmet Cuddy constructed remains on Detritus’ head, still cooling his brain and helping the troll to think clearer thoughts.

Annotation
When the petty frustrations and irritations of police work get to Cuddy, he screams and yells "I'm too short for this shit!" Compare this to "I'm too old for this shit!" - a line spoken by Danny Glover, as Det Sgt Roger Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon (a film centering on the cliché of two ill-assorted coppers being partnered together). By the end of MAA, Cuddy's partner Detritus has certainly found his lethal weapon....

The Gonne, like so many other recent technological devices in Discworld, was invented by Leonard of Quirm. As usual, he had the best of intentions when he devised it, but it turned out to be one of the most dangerous weapons ever conceived in the history of the Disc.

The weapon is powered by a kind of firework mechanism. It consists of a long tube with a feed mechanism for 6 small cartridges that can be fired quickly and with dangerous accuracy over a long distance. This fact makes the Gonne much more dangerous than the common crossbows.

It was so dangerous, in fact, that Havelock Vetinari, who normally keeps anything useful around, ordered it destroyed. But the Assassins' Guild disobeyed the order, and instead secretly kept it under lock and key in their Guild Museum. Disaster strikes in the book Men at Arms when the Gonne is stolen.

With almost supernatural power, the Gonne can possess the mind of the man who uses it. It shows him the power he has in his hands, and erases all scruples by telling him what could be achieved with this power. Even Samuel Vimes struggled against this temptation and the only man who seemed to be entirely immune to the Gonne's promises was Carrot Ironfoundersson, who finally managed to destroy the weapon once and for all. Carrot is immune because he has a dwarf's pragmatic attitude: a made thing is just a tool crafted for a purpose. why should I listen when it talks to me, as there's nothing there to do the talking? (This is probably why Hammerhock was killed after his purpose, of performing a minor repair on the gonne, was over. He also viewed it as a device, a clever device but nothing more, and was loudly speculating on building more&mdash;a prospect which the Gonne did not like.)

The Gonne has never been seen again. It has been suggested that Carrot buried it in the coffin of Lance-Constable Cuddy. His reasoning was that as the Gonne "died" when he smashed it against a stone pillar, its spirit could accompany Cuddy on his journey into the Afterlife, so as to provide a suitable weapon to fend off the evil spirits that Dwarfs don't believe in, but which may inconveniently believe in Dwarfs. The fact that it was well hidden and no man could re-create such a dangerous device ever again (unless they find Leonard's original sketch and get interesting ideas) was of course purely a secondary consideration.

Contribution to industrialization
The Gonne might represent a quantum leap in crime and warfare, but in the process of manufacturing the Gonne Leonard comes up with an invention which while unnoticed is a cornerstone of industrialization. When Vetinari asked Leonard if someone else could build a Gonne, his response includes:

...the grooves in the barrel requires some finesse, I had to build a quite complex tool for that

The tool that Leonard had built for this purpose was a screw-cutting lathe, one of the cornerstones in the progression from craftsmanship to serial production.

Roundworld Comparison
In Roundworld terminology, Leonard's Gonne is probably a self-loading wheel-lock rifle. Though it fires six shots before reloading, it is definitely not a revolver; the six welded tubes of the magazine are arranged in a line, and advanced by a rack and pinion, making it either a repeater or a self-loader. The rack and pinion suggest some form of automatic recocking mechanism, making a self-loader more likely. The grooves in the barrel imply rifling, as opposed to a smooth bore like a musket. The firing mechanism is described as a "tinderbox," which means flint and steel; this could be either a wheel-lock, snaphance or flintlock, but the wheel lock is the only one that would be contemporary with Leonardo da Vinci, whom Leonard clearly resembles.

In Roundworld history, some efforts were made to build repeating firearms during the wheel-lock and flintlock era, such as the Kalthoff repeating wheel-lock of the early 1600s. Repeating firearms would not become widely used, however, until the invention of the metal cartridge in the 19th century, and self-loaders later still. Nothing precisely like Leonard's weapon ever existed, though its various components all did at one time or another.

The museum at Château du Clos Lucé, in Amboise, France, where Da Vinci spent the last 3 years of his life, along with the models (made from his drawings) of a tank (of sorts) and a <strike>spinning-up-into-air-machine</strike> screw-drive helicopter also contains a model of a kind of multi-shot machine gun, though it is different in scale (each barrel is a couple of meters long).

In WW2, the standard issue machine-guns used by the Japanese and the Italians worked on a similar principle to the loading system for the Gonne, adjusted to allow for automatic fire. Rather than a loose flexible belt in which the individual rounds were loaded into a cloth strip (as per Russian practice), or linked by re-usable metal clips (as per German), these MG's employed a fixed and rigid "tray" in which the rounds were fixed to an inflexible metal strip capable of carrying no more than ten rounds at a time. At least the British Bren Gun loaded its rounds into a fully enclosed magazine. The Italians fought their war in a desert&mdash;they soon discovered their system was an invitation to load sand and grit into the mechanism as well as the round. The Japanese discovered similar drawbacks in the jungle. But this indicates how, with a little refinement to the design, the gonne in the Discworld could so easily have become an Auto-Kinetic Machined Gonne That Carries On Firing Without Human Intervention.

One of the earliest proto-machine-guns, the Mittraileuse of the late 1700's, involved six to twelve independently loaded musket mechanisms. The barrels and chambers attached to a rotating wheel, which as it fired swung the next barrel into place to meet the flintlock. While it took forever to load each barrel, once deployed it could lay down a quick and devastating burst of fire along a tactically vital arc. The French used it as a static weapon in fortresses.

And if you scale up a gonne, or scale down a Barking Dog (a legal weapon on the Discworld), where is the point at which a Gonne becomes an efficient artillery piece, or a Barking Dog a crudely effective but strictly illegal hand-held weapon?
Count Henning von überwald is an old man living in the von Überwald Mansion in Ankh-Morpork. His condition is not very good, he is in a wheelchair and he spends most of his time in the conservatory of the mansion to keep his temperature. The count first talks to Inspector Lewton when he is in the mansion, and tells him to keep him informed about the Mundy case. He was a good friend of his driver, Regin, and when he goes missing, he tells Lewton to find out about him. Later in the game, the count's condition gets worse and worse, and Lewton can see Death waiting for him to die at his side. The count finaly dies during a tremor caused by the summoning of Nylonathatep, but left instructions to his butler to pay Lewton through the case and allow him to use the Libraris Apocrypha further.

Noble dragons (Draco nobilis) are intelligent, arrogant, powerful, and graceful and beautiful in a specialized sense. Noble dragons are huge and winged, can produce an extremely hot flame, and seem to defy normal physics in both their flying and their flaming. If they are flesh and blood, each noble dragon will weigh many tons, but the one noble dragon that appeared in Ankh-Morpork lazily flaps its wings once to take off and glides for the rest of the flight. The noble dragon doesn't seem to have eaten much in the way of energy-rich fuels, but its flame has been far hotter than that of the most gluttonous swamp dragons.

The fact is, the noble dragon is one of the Discworld species that has evolved to live on magic. Their body materializes by magic, they flame by magic, and they fly (or glide) by magic. Since the large amount of magic required for a noble dragon to exist in the more normal dimensions of Discworld is not available everywhere, noble dragons have gone into another dimension, all metaphorically squished up like rather huge and beautiful sardines. A noble dragon is summoned by a person, or several people, performing a ritual according to The Summoning of Dragons written by the wizard Tubal de Malachite many years ago. People performing this ritual have to imagine the dragon very intensely, and gather objects that might be magical. The noble dragon feeds on the magic, comes through the mind of one of those people, and afterwards may be able to read his mind. In effect, the materialized noble dragon shares some personality traits with the performer of this ritual.

Dragons can also be summoned in the presence of a very intense field of raw magic, like the ones in the Wyrmberg in TCOM. A very powerful imagination and concentration is also needed. Depending on the imagination of the person and the training, one can summon different quantities of dragons, but they can only keep on existing within range of the Wyrmberg (because of some kind of inverse square law). As the dragons fly away they start to dwindle.

Moon dragons are the dragons found on the moonlet of the Discworld. All moon dragons are silvery in color, as is everything else&mdash;including the plants that the dragons eat—on the moon. Moon dragons have a sleek shape and flame backwards, using a rocket-like propulsion system in the low-gravity environment on the moon. They have nice wings, but these are used for steering the flight instead of gliding (as done by noble dragons) or flapping (as done by swamp dragons). Moon dragons are discovered when the crew of the Kite landed on the moon for refueling purposes, during an attempt to avert destruction of Dunmanifestin on Cori Celesti by the Silver Horde (see TLH).

Opinion is divided among zoologists and students of these things, but following the discovery of the moon dragons, a theory was proposed that suggested that the whole sorry race of swamp dragons are the debased descendants of moon dragons who literally fell to earth. Separated from their high-octane diet of lunar vegetation, the dragons adapted to what they could find on the Disc, which neatly explains why they are such an unstable lifeform prone to so many illnesses and inadvertent explosions: they are doggedly holding on, living on a diet they were not originally meant to eat. Only the property of dragons, to internally rearrange themselves to make use of what poor-quality fuel there is, has ensured their survival as a species. Indeed, the ability of a dragon to rearrange its own innards to suit circumstances means that the swamp dragon has learnt to flame from what the human race has come to think of as the right end, but at the cost of losing much of its ability to fly. The recent existence of a mutant called Errol who was remarkable for (a) flaming from the "wrong" end and (b) being able to fly is now taken as supporting evidence for this notion: far from being a mutant or a sport, Errol was as near as possible a true genetic version of the moon dragon who thrived on the highly refined substances to be found in the Treacle Mine Road Watch House - ie, lamp-oil and Carrot's armour polish.

As Sybil Ramkin's expressed desire, on seeing Errol fly, was to breed back into the line to try to get more of this sub-species, it is highly possible that she and other members of the Cavern Club have managed to do it. After all, the Kite brought more moon dragons back to earth, and in one sense, it's hardly dragon magic, is it...

The classic illegal stimulant for trolls has been Slab, ammonium chloride cut with radium. However, there are a number of other less common and much more dangerous substances. Most, if not all of them, begin with an "s", but there are a few exceptions:

* Crystal Slam
* Scrape
* Slab
* Sleek
* Slice
* Slide
* Sliver
* Slump
* Slunkie
* Slurp
* Honk

As for why the names of most troll drugs begin with an "s" &ndash; it make dem easier to remember.

By the time of , it becomes apparent that a new drug named Slide has began to replace the dominance of Slab; this causes trolls to go on the rampage and sounds somewhat similar to crack cocaine. The troll in question thinks that he can take on the world. He thinks he has no need for sleep, or food, or drink, and soon enough, he has no need for life. Chrysoprase even claims its introduction has driven him to get out of the drug distribution business altogether.

A similar drug called Crystal Slam is mentioned in SN. It's so dangerous that it kills trolls after a few uses. As a result of this, the Diamond King of Trolls has stamped down hard on it's usage: production is illegal throughout the entire world, and it's a hanging offence to try to sell it in any troll city (including, of course, Ankh-Morpork).

Vetinari's position on recreational chemicals for everyone in general and trolls in particular is expressed also in Snuff:

<blockquote>‘You know my position, Drumknott. I have no particular objection to people taking substances that make them feel better, or more contented or, for that matter, see little dancing purple fairies &ndash; or even their god if it comes to that. It’s their brain, after all, and society can have no claim on it, providing they’re not operating heavy machinery at the time. However, to sell drugs to trolls that actually make their heads explode is simply murder, the capital crime. I am glad to say that Commander Vimes fully agrees with me on this issue.’</blockquote>

One of the more dangerous drugs available to Trolls, slide is first mentioned in . In Ankh-Morpork, it has begun to replace the dominance of Slab as the troll stimulant of choice. Sounding somewhat similar to crack cocaine, Slide causes trolls to go on a rampage and think they can take on the world. They then think they have no need for sleep, or food, or drink, and soon enough, they have no need for life.

Chrysoprase claims that because of the increasing predominance of Slide, he has gotten out of the drugs business. In an effort to prove his sincerity, he turns a troll drug laboratory over to Sam Vimes, who cynically notes that there's no profit in killing your customers.
Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, and predecessor to Mad Lord Snapcase. Also known as Homicidal Lord Winder. During the last years of his reign, he was known to be extremely paranoid, with the caveat he really was the target of a great number of schemes against him. He took pride in being pathologically careful about everything.

He was impressed by the theories of Findthee Swing, and gave him at first a job in the City Watch, and later made him head of the Unmenitonables, because Swing could sniff out conspiracies like nobody else.

Final Years And Death
Since a failed assassination attempt on the insane Lord Winder by "a kid who was equally mad", he went all out on security, employing food tasters, bodyguards, and creating the Cable Street Particulars in order to protect him and the "city".

In the end, the Assassins' Guild felt it necessary to inhume him for the common good. But, much to Doctor Folletts' annoyance, the guild had already lost three members before John Bleedwell failed, but bled well. According to the little-known rule that, whenever possible, the victim should be told who had sent the Assassin, Havelock Vetinari tells Winder: "I come from the city." Since Vetinari has read the contract of Bleedwell, we can assume that this was a fact. Winder was killed not by the sword, but the heart attack induced by seeing the assassin Vetinari.

CMOT Dibbler or Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler is a fixture in the street life of Ankh-Morpork , where he is a perpetually failing salesman. He gets fancy new ideas (such as feng-shui consulting, or selling stale rocks to trolls) which never work. His product line includes Dibbler's Homoeopathic Shampoo, which failed to meet the expectations of the customer. Sometimes he sells things that don't belong to him or don't even exist (although such business practices are rather common in Ankh-Morpork). Dibbler has sometimes managed to be the top manager in a blooming new industry (like in MP or SM), but either due to bad luck or the fact it's the semi-real Discworld (where magical phenomena bloom but don't last long), he consistently fails. Fortunately, he always has a backup trade to fall back on: selling Sausage inna bun, the sausage made not of pork but rather of anything that's been near a pig. Dibbler's sausages taste awful, but with a lot of sizzling onions and persistent price-cutting, Dibbler always manages to make a living by selling these sausages to people who have gotten sick from his sausages before. This demonstrates that he is a very good salesman.

His mercantile aspirations, and lack of aptitude for it, make the Dibbler-like character instantly recognisable, as does the appalling food that is his fall-back product. Suspiciously similar characters appear in several countries including Ankh-Morpork, Agatean Empire, XXXX, and Omnia, all having a similar name and a nickname which describes self-harm. Several of these Dibbler-like salesmen have been encountered by Rincewind. When Rincewind meets a Dibbler-double, he ponders on the theory that there are only a small number of real people in the world, and the many people you meet are merely duplicates, that's why you seem to meet the same person all across the world (this discussion on many of the Dibblers can be found in TLC). Indeed, there seems to be a bit of kindred spirit between the two: Both suffer from pre-emptive karma. If it looks like anything good is going to happen, something bad happens immediately to balance things, and keeps on happening right through when the good should happen. Dibbler is a little more lucky, though: He gets some of the good, but the bad is building up quick under the surface.

In Ankh-Morpork, Dibbler's nickname CMOT comes from his claims along the lines of "selling this at such a low price that it's cutting me own throat". The Omnian Dhblah makes a similar claim earning him the nickname Cut-Me-Own-Hand-Off. Not all Dibblers make claims about the pricing aspect. The Agatean Dibhala says "may I disembowel meself honourably!" when customers complain about the low quality of his merchandise (in IT). No Dibblers have been found in Überwald as of yet, but since the local lore strictly prohibits the purveyance of dodgy sausages, locating a Dibbler there may require a closer inspection of the local gibbets.

NW tells us that, at least in the alternate history in which Vimes was sent back in time, the phrase "cutting me own throat" was in fact suggested to him by Vimes (occupying the vital space of Sgt.-at-Arms John Keel) who of course knew him from the future. However, In MM, it is revealed that Dibbler's full name is in fact Claude Maximilian Overton Transpire Dibbler, which creates the interesting question of whether the name or the nickname came first. It could well be one of those strange coincidences that are not unknown on Roundworld, and practically normal on Discworld. It might be good marketing, or a ploy to make applying for a bank loan easier, for Dibbler to assume proper names that fit in with the C.M.O.T. nickname. After all, until the rules were changed to prevent this happening again, Dibbler was astute enough to register with the Patrician as the sole member of the Guild of C.M.O.T. Dibblers...

Self-serving though they might be, Dibbler and his sound-alike counterparts occasionally do display a streak of political activism. Night Watch reveals that C.M.O.T. was peripherally involved in dissident activities against Lord Winder, carrying messages for one of the revolutionary groups; in both versions of history, he also participated in the struggles at Treacle Mine Road, and now wears the lilac annually. His Agatean counterpart in Interesting Times carried a copy of that subversive document, "What I Did On My Holidays", and both the Ecksian and Omnian Dibblers express political opinions that are less than complimentary to government policy.

Of course, being Dibblers, such professed activism may simply be a way to ensure that, once the revolution comes, they can sell overpriced souvenirs to the victorious side, no matter which it is.

Dibbler is also resolutely against the idea of taking a salaried job working for somebody else. Something in his soul absolutely revolts against this. When he is effectively—literally as well as metaphorically&mdash;tied to a desk to turn out spurious and sensationalist stories for the Ankh-Morpork Inquirer, he welcomes his liberation by William de Worde and the dwarfs with open arms. However, he only accepts a job writing advertising copy for the Ankh-Morpork Times when William makes it absolutely clear that Dibbler will be working as a freelance journalist and not a Times man. It may be the case that Dibbler still to this day turns other peoples' products into best sellers with his own inspired, if not altogether legal, decent, honest and truthful, advertising copy. After all, as Moist von Lipwig reflected, Dibbler can sell sausage by its "squeal" and smell and not its taste, or people would not keep coming back for more the way they do. Men who can sell the squeal are rare and valuable. His stories also helped the Inquirer outsell the Times: oddly enough, Dibbler himself thought nobody would ever believe them.

In CAM, it is revealed that Dibbler is one half of a publishing house based on Monkey Street called Toplis & Dibbler. The identity of the mysterious Mr Toplis, if he exists, is not yet known. But this publishing firm is responsible for the magazines Back Street Pins and Girls, Giggles and Garters. Top-quality works for the discerning connoisseur of art, naturally.

RS sees him in an entirely logical and unsurprising occupation—with New Ankh expanding to take on the rapidly growing city population, he is now, at least until the houses start subsiding into the swamps they are built on, a property speculator. Although Harry King, Moist von Lipwig and Dick Simnel will be providing both competition and better-built houses for their railway workers as a necessary spin-off from steam.
Wife of the magistrate in Ham-on-Koom and an alumna of the Quirm College for Young Ladies. A contemporary of Lady Sybil Ramkin, she is married to a quiet unassuming man who dispenses local justice without fear, favour, or corruption, in the mornings, and who goes fly-fishing in the afternoons. She has a daughter who is married and lives just outside Quirm, and a son who had to depart for Fourecks in something of a hurry over a complete misunderstanding, but who is now very big in sheep, she hears.
:This article is about the son of Time. For the character in The Long Earth, see Lobsang.

Lobsang Ludd was born as one soul with two bodies from Wen the Eternally Surprised and Time. Nanny Ogg assisted at the birth, and witnessed the two souls being born. This can probably be explained by the whole universe being destroyed and recreated in an instant by Time. The two babies were put on the doorsteps of the Clockmakers' Guild and the Thieves' Guild. Naming conventions for the guilds resulted in the surnames Ludd and Clockson.

Jeremy became the best clockmaker of Ankh-Morpork and was chosen by the Auditors to build the new Glass Clock which would stop time. A brilliant clockmaker, Jeremy succeeds. His brilliance does come at a price: all he cares about are clocks, he is not strong in social relations and has to take medicine (closely monitored by the guild) to behave in a socially accepted way. His Igor notices that his extreme sanity and orderliness is just another form of madness.

Newgate Ludd grows up entirely different, baffling people with his speed in stealing things, often small objects. On the run from persecutors he falls, but saves his life by performing the Stance of the Coyote. This is noticed by Marco Soto who sends him to the History Monks to be trained, where he receives the name Lobsang. Mostly because he has such talents he's a lazy student who gets thrown into the care of sweeper Lu-Tze. They both head to Ankh-Morpork, supposedly to learn The Way of Mrs. Cosmopilite, but really to find and destroy the Glass Clock. In the aftermath of the stopping of time, Lobsang meets Susan Sto Helit and together they find his "brother" who got wounded in the events. Their souls get reunited, but Lobsang is his preferred personality. Between him and Susan a romance blossoms.

After restoring the world and the flow of time, Lobsang takes over the job as Time so his parents can enjoy some time off. He meets Lu-Tze in a duel who beats him with Deja Fu, finishing his education and making him a fully approved sweeper.
Lobsang is a character in The Long Earth. He is a Tibetan motorcycle repairman... who has been reincarnated as a supercomputer. The reasoning was that several sixth generation computers have tried without success to be named a human, but, if it is said that the computer is actually a human being (albeit in an unusual form) there can be no trouble. Any people who try to argue with the practicality of reincarnation will get some very short shrift from the religious community.
He now part-owns transEarth, a company which studies the various Long Earths, since the founder, Douglas Black, offered him a partnership. He does have a sense of humour, as he frequently disguises himself as a soft drinks dispenser.
