Ly Tin Wheedle is referred to as arguably the Disc's greatest philosopher in a number of the books - however, it is generally him that's doing the arguing! As he lived sometime in the distant, forgotten past, he does not actually appear as a character in any Discworld novels; rather his pithy statements are quoted in many different contexts.

The first mention of Ly Tin Wheedle is in the opening pages of TLF (where his name is spelled "Weedle"): "... it is said that someone at a party once asked the famous philosopher Ly Tin Weedle 'Why are you here?' and the reply took three years."

Created the Singing Spoon. His many sayings advocating respect for the old and the virtues of poverty are frequently quoted by the rich and elderly. Some of his aphorisms are below:

"The only thing known to go faster than ordinary light is monarchy", according to the philosopher Ly Tin Wheedle. He reasoned like this: "you can't have more than one king, and tradition demands that there is no gap between kings, so when a king dies the succession must therefore pass to the heir instantaneously. Presumably", he said, "there must be some elementary particles -- kingons, or possibly queeons -- that do the job, but of course succession sometimes fails if, in mid-flight, they strike an anti-particle, or republicon." His ambitious plans to use his discovery to send messages, involving the careful torturing of a small king in order to modulate the signal, were never fully expounded because, at that point, the bar closed.

"Chaos is found in greatest abundance wherever order is being sought. It always defeats order, because it is better organized."

When the philosophical community came to the conclusion that distance was an illusion and all places were in fact the same place, Ly Tin Wheedle was the philosopher to make the famed conclusion that "Although all places were in fact the same place, that place was very big".

Mr Slant of Morecombe, Slant & Honeyplace is the head of the Guild of Lawyers in Ankh-Morpork. He is always involved in shadowy business but never caught out committing a crime. He died ages ago, but that has never stopped him from continuing his work.

In FOC, as the Patrician lies poisoned, Mr Slant addresses the leaders of the Guilds and introduces the plot to make Nobby Nobbs King of Ankh-Morpork. We are told that Mr Slant became a zombie as he wished to pursue the financial disbursements involved in conducting his own defence at the trial that apparently lead to his execution by beheading, and that his head has been sewn back onto his body.

In TT we discover that - zombies being rather dry - one of the few things he fears is fire.

Among the people who fear Mr Slant are the rest of the lawyers of Ankh-Morpork, as seen in MM. Not only has he read those big intimidating books that they keep behind them on shelves to scare their clients, he in fact wrote many of them. Plus he has been around so long (in MM, he is 351 years old) that he almost counts as legal precedent on his own.

"Mr. Slant did not, despite what had been said, have the respect of Ankh-Morpork's legal profession. He commanded its fear. Death had not diminished his encyclopedic memory, his guile, his talent for corkscrew reasoning, and the vitriol of his stare. Do not cross me this day, it advised the lawyers. Do not cross me, for if you do I will have the flesh from your very bones and the marrow therein. You know those leather-bound tomes you have on the wall behind your desk to impress your clients? ==Blurb==
A Discworld Whodunnit

Who's murdering harmless old men? Who's poisoning the Patrician?

As autumn fogs hold Ankh-Morpork in their grip, the City Watch have to track down a murderer who can't be seen.

Maybe the golems know something - but the solemn men of clay, who work all day and night and are never any trouble to anyone, have started to commit suicide...

It's not as if the Watch hasn't got problems of its own. There's a werewolf suffering from Pre-Lunar Tension. Corporal Nobbs is hobnobbing with the nobs, and there's something really strange about the new dwarf recruit, especially his earrings and eyeshadow.

Who can you trust when there are mobs on the streets and plotters in the dark and all the clues point the wrong way?

In the gloom of the night, Watch Commander Sir Samuel Vimes finds that the truth might not be out there at all.

It may be in amongst the words in the head.

A chilling tale of poison and pottery.

Cover
Josh Kirby's cover features a golem emerging through the fog with a cleaver in his hand. The watchmen on the Right are Detritus, Angua and Cheery/Cheri. The Death of Rats and Wee Mad Arthur are collecting dead rats.
Annotations
"It's the actual bread he personally wielded at the Battle of Koom Valley, killing fifty*seven trolls" - one of the frequent 57 references in TP's work.

The golems expressly build Meshugeh to be King over them, and load his head with so many conflicting and mutually opposed chems that he goes psychotic.

Given the interestingly Jewish names and personalities that Terry ascribes to the golems - they even scribe onto their chalkboards with a very Hebraic script - this evokes the struggles described in the Books of Samuel and Kings in the Bible. The people of Israel, having won their land and being at the pinnacle of their strength after rule by a generally wise and God-fearing succession of Judges, fall into sin with the Almighty by deciding what they really want is a King. This is despite God being opposed to the idea - there is only one King over Israel, and it's Me - and warning His people it will all end in tears.

In 1 Samuel chapter 8, the story unfolds itself. Samuel, prophet and last Judge over Israel, relays God's annoyance with his people and warns them not to try for wrath. He advises them that God will meet them halfway - they can have their King if God chooses the candidate. And then he lists an onerous set of commandments defining the King's relationship with his people and the people's duties to the King - these are on a par with the dozens of chems pushed into the head of the golem-king.

Samuel's last words as Judge are "And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves; but the Lord will not answer you on that day."

The golem-king Meshugeh causes similar sorrow to his people before being destroyed...
