Al-Khali is an associate of Jasper Horst, who's job is to follow Inspector Lewton to wherever he goes to spy on him, and report everything to Horst. ==Blurb==
It seemed an easy job ...

After all, how difficult could it be to make sure that a servant girl doesn't marry a prince?

But for the witches Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick, traveling to the distant city of Genua, things are never that simple ...

For one thing, all they've got is Mrs. Gogol's voodoo, a one-eyed cat and a second-hand magic wand that can only do pumpkins. And they're up against the malignant power of the Godmother herself, who has made Destiny an offer it can't refuse. And finally there's the sheer power of the Story. Servant girls have to marry the Prince. That's what life is all about.

You can't fight a Happy Ending.

At least – up until now ...
* Fat Tuesday aka Mardi Gras aka Samedi Nuit Mort (literally, "Saturday Night Dead", parodying the TV show Saturday_Night_Live
* Although the Roundworld Carnival and Mardi Gras occur in late winter, just before Lent, Genua's Carnival occurs in the fall; Terry appears to have calqued it upon the Haitian Night of the Dead (All Hallows' Eve), when Voudon worshipers beat drums in cemeteries to awaken the dancing Lord of the Dead Baron Samedi (Saturday) and his troupe of Gede revelers; the Duc's masked ball relates the night to the Halloween tradition.

Annotations
* Even though they're on a presumably "covert" mission, Nanny hands her letters to the nearest passer-by for delivery. Does this seem wise? And none of them arrived before she did.

* 'In some foreign parts "bum" means "tramp" and "tramp" means "hobo"' - On Roundworld, this is true for American English. The full chain goes something like this: "American [kitty] = British fanny", "American fanny = British bum", "American bum = British tramp", "American tramp = uh, ... lady of easy virtue". Interestingly, we've never seen any part of DiscWorld that's similar to the USA. (Even though the riverboat ride down the Vieux River is irrestibly close to the high life of the antebellum Deep South, what with a floating pleasure palace for the gentry, and slaves, ie chained trolls, providing the motive power to turn the wheels of the boat. Could have been the Mississipi running down to the Delta and N'awlins, y'all...)

* While traveling down a subterranean river, a creature climbs out of the water on a log, declaring to the witches that, "It's my birthday." This is a reference to the character Gollum from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books, who acquired the One Ring on his birthday.

* While walking down a road paved with yellow bricks, a small farm house lands on Nanny Ogg, the only one of the witches wearing red boots. Shortly afterward, a group of dwarves show up asking if they can have her boots. In The Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch of the East is crushed by Dorothy Gale's farmhouse and her sparkly red shoes are given to the witchicidal young woman.

Amber (née Petty) is a thirteen year old girl when first encountered. Tragically, this debut sees her the victim of a brutal physical asault by her own, drunken father - it has not only left her unconscious, but she has also miscarried her unborn child.

Tiffany Aching takes charge, delivering appropriate punishment to her drunken brute of a father. Tiffany then organises round-the-clock nursing care of a very unique sort - Amber is adopted by the Nac Mac Feegles, where the Kelda, Jeannie, performs the deep rite of the Soothings to restore her body and soul. The dead baby is buried alongside Mrs Snapperly, in the place of remembrance Tiffany has established near the village.

It soon becomes noticeable that the neglected child, thought simple by the rest of the village, is in her own way a born witch, whose specialised talent goes further and deeper than Tiffany's. She is revealed to be a master of languages - she commands chickens around a yard, but more importantly picks up the Pictsie tongue (Amber even understands some of the Soothings).

Tiffany arranged for the new Baron to provide Amber a dowry, allowing her tailor boyfriend William to buy his indenture to a master craftsman. One year later (aged fourteen) Amber had married William, and was training under the Kelda.
Crispin Horsefry of Ankh-Morpork Mercintile Bank is a vile young man with huge appetites. He puts one in mind of an overweight, yappy pekingese. He was one of those few who bought into Reacher Gilt's vile schemes to defraud the rightful owners of the Grand Trunk. The sight of him eating pot-au-feu was an "unforgettable one" according to Lord Vetinari. He wore pink shirts that were $100AM each - this when a Watchman's monthly salary was around $30AM. Stupidly he brought his secret financial records (you have to keep records of your tracks so that you know how to cover them) to Gilt when drunk, and was rewarded with a visit from Mr Gryle the banshee.
The picture suggests a link: to the now deceased British Conservative politician Lord Hailsham, who was renowned for his appetite to the point where he would eat two six-course dinners back-to-back. Weighing well over forty-five stone (nearly 600 pounds for Americans)when he died, he set about sculpting his gargantuan figure early in life. He was renowned for his dog-like devotion to Margaret Thatcher and for his singular lack of any original political or indeed other thought (that's maybe stretching a truth - Lord Halisham was bright enough to side with Churchill against Chamberlain, fought and was severely wounded in WWII, and wrote quite an interesting book, attacking a man named Victor Gollancz - yes, THAT Gollancz). He bought into, and was a prominent spokesman for, the Thatcherite school of extreme laissez-faire economics, which argued that the risk-taker and entrepreneur who generated a nation's wealth should be allowed to do so, unencumbered by any of those pesky little rules and regulations that got in the way of his making money. He should, this school of thought opined, have as near to absolute freedom to generate wealth, and be taxed as lightly as possible by a State that should not interfere with the freedom of Capital. Formerly publicly-owned enterprises, in fact, should be sold off to such men, as the State had no business in managing business. The Thatcher government put this into practice on many occasions - including the privatisation of the telecommunications industry.

The concept that the absolute freedom of capitalists to make money might infringe the quality of life and/or civil liberties of those lower down the line was regarded as an unimportant consideration... (now doesn't this remind you of the subtext of GP?)

Hailsham was touchy about people making fun either of his weight or of his right-wing politics: an early action in the 1960's as Quintin Hogg MP was to attempt to sue jokester pop group The Bonzo Dog Band, who on one of their LP's made an unflattering porcine reference to his eating habits. (see "Controversies" section at the end) He is now deceased, and this is fair comment...

Thought of as a lot of time and trouble to go to, just to sharpen the Pharaoh's razor blade. (Although should Pharaoh be female, as happens for half the time over the long haul, a good sharp razor for legs and underarms is something any girl values. And with more surface area to cover, they blunt that much more quickly... so a useful theory for the origination of pyramids is that Pharaoh put her foot down, and insisted that a sharp fresh blade be laid out alongside the bath of ass's milk.)

A Pyramid, properly viewed as a device for manipulating time, doesn't so much keep a razor blade sharp as remind it of a time in its life when it wasn't blunt, and to make a suggestion that this would be a nice time to revisit, for just long enough to do Pharaoh's legs.

In Djelibeybi, too many pyramids have accumulated over the years for Time to be entirely stable here. The very last pyramid built in this country tipped the whole assembly into a critical mass, with interesting results. See P for details.
Vetinari has also taken care to be "appropriately generous" when the occasion calls for it, and has made a useful ally, giving him an edge over other assassins who wouldn't even think to ask after the welfare of a mere servant's wife and child.
There also used to be a Sergeant 'Skully' Maroon in the Watch.
Twelve-year-old Johnny receives a pirate edition of the new video game Only You Can Save Mankind from his friend Wobbler. However, he hasn't been playing for long when the ScreeWee Empire surrenders to him. After accepting the surrender he finds himself inside the game in his dreams, where he must deal with the suspicious Gunnery Officer as well as the understanding Captain, and work out exactly what they're all supposed to do now.

This might all be the result of an over-active imagination except that the ScreeWee have disappeared altogether from everyone else's copy of the game. With the help of another player, Kirsty, who calls herself "Sigourney" (as in Weaver), Johnny must try to get the ScreeWee home.
