Mrs. Manger is President of the Launderers' Guild, which represents the interests of the City's washerwomen, launderers and cleaners of clothing.
The Mandala is similar to those on Roundworld, but with one important difference: instead of being coloured sand arranged by humans to depict or represent reality as they see it, on the Discworld the History Monks of Oi Dong watch the mandala because it is reality, and it dictates to them what they do. Based on the patterns in the Mandala, the Abbot orders his monks about, often sending them on perilous journeys to ensure the safe passage of time.

The term Mandala (Sanskrit maṇḍala "circle", "completion") is a term used to refer to various objects. It is of Hindu origin, but is also used in other Dharmic religions, such as Buddhism. In the Tibetan branch of Vajrayana Buddhism, they have been developed into sandpainting. In practice, mandala has become a generic term for any plan, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically, a microcosm of the Universe from the human perspective.

In various spiritual traditions, mandala may be employed for focusing attention of aspirants and adepts, a spiritual teaching tool, for establishing a sacred space and as an aid to meditation and trance induction. Its symbolic nature can help one "to access progressively deeper levels of the unconscious, ultimately assisting the meditator to experience a mystical sense of oneness with the ultimate unity from which the cosmos in all its manifold forms arises".

This is William Pouter's portrait of Vetinari with his faithful pet dog, Wuffles. (Although there are rumours that the Patrician carefully nurtures a man who is his exact body double, for specifically stated reasons such as sitting for portraits, or attending long-winded civic functions where it is important that the Patrician be seen to attend).

Normally on display in the Royal Art Museum, for most of the events described in MM, there was presumably an empty space on the wall and a face-saving notice hastily pinned up there apologising that the portrait had been taken down for cleaning.

The picture had in fact been stolen to order (Sir Reynold Stitched gloomily admitted that this is an occupational hazard of running an art gallery) and when encountered in MM, is in fact hanging on the wall in Cosmo Lavish's study as part of his obsessive and some might say, lunatic, drive to become Vetinari and take his place as Patrician.

Cosmo succeeds so well in becoming as one with Vetinari - at least, to his own satisfaction - that he actually has intelligent conversations with the painting. Although the advanced blood poisoning brought about by a gangrenous finger might have something to do with this particular heightened state of consciousness.

Following official recognition of Cosmo's claim to the Patricianship, and a greater interest being taken in the private lives of the Lavish family (if only to recover several tons of missing gold), it is posible the painting has been recovered and is now back in its rightful place.

Although Sir Reynold must surely now be thinking of enhanced security measures, as that's twice now that a major artwork has been stolen from his Gallery...

The last resort of all Sourcerers.

Devised by the sourcerer Maligree to be a quiet place where he could go for a smoke and a think, it takes the form of a beautiful Garden_of_Eden with faraway distantly-glimpsed purple mountains.

The spell is performed in the book S, where it is used in a Wizard's duel by Coin and Skarmer Billias, and later on by Coin as he enters his private world.

By the time of Sourcery, the potency of the spell has diminished to the point where even the best wizard can only call up a Garden two feet wide. Coin the sourcerer restores the power of the spell, briefly taking up to eight hundred Wizards inside the Garden as a demonstration of his powers. He wistfully says he would like to go there again some day, and his wish is granted right at the very end, after Death has finally claimed the malevolent soul of Ipslore the Red, the true evil genius behind all the recent havoc.

It is said that all sourcerers who know the secret will go into the Garden in the end, and never come out again. Whether this is due to the realisation that the Disc cannot cope with them, to the fact that the Wonderful Garden is better than life, or to absent-mindedness is gracefully left to the reader's own reading...

Of the odd collection of volunteers who turn out for Sgt. Jackrum's recruiting party for Borogravia's Tenth Foot, the least likely is a Reformed Vampire who spends several minutes filling in all his names, but the only one we hear is Maladict. He arrives typically elegantly dressed, with his own sword(1), looking like a gentleman officer-candidate, and Vampires are notoriously good at getting people to do what they want, so it's not surprising that he's the first promoted when the squad needs a lance-corporal. He has been a member of the Überwald League of Temperance and a Black Ribboner for two years and relies on transferring his obsession from blood to coffee. He carries the sack of beans and the little silver pot like a portable shrine, but soon after he joins the squad they are stolen.

Deprived of this crutch, he begins to have flashbacks from a war that never was, fought with weapons he's never seen in a jungle area against an enemy called "Charlie". The hallucinations are so powerful that others around him can hear and feel them too. Polly is warned about this by Otto Chriek who advises that someone packs a stake because vampires deprived of their raison d'etre (having transferred it from the b-vord) may revert. Igors have experience in this area and call these hallucinations "flashsides" - flashbacks to events that the sufferers have never personally experienced. They also pack a bag and prepare to limp for it when they see them; they're a BAD sign. Fortunately, the gods(2) are watching and Buggy Swires drops half a pound of Klatch's best on him (literally), just in time.

After the surprises common through the book, Maladicta remains in the army. It might be amusing for a few hundred years. Army life's not so bad when most weapons used by the enemy will have no effect, and you can't be (permanently) killed.

(1) For other people's protection, not his.
(2) Actually just Sam Vimes, god of getting what you deserve, sometimes.

Annotation
The flashsides that Maladict experience are from another time and space entirely: they are from the Vietnam_War, where there was an enemy called Charlie (by you, if you were an American, at any rate), the forest was a lot more like a jungle, there were machines in the sky that went "whop-whop-whop" and the soldiery may well have employed terms such as "el-tee" (lit. 'LT' - shorthand for lieutenant, however it's pronounced) and "RV".

A vampire named "Fenrir or Maledicta or something" [sic] is among the vampyrs in the family retinue of the de Magpyr family and is seen by Agnes Nitt to be overborne by the rebellious peasants of Escrow. Could this be the same Mal and the trigger event that made her join the Ribboners and develop a coffee addiction? After all, she has already been Weatherwaxed and craved tea, so it's not a long jump.
Owing to the intervention of the Goddess, Malaclypse has here been raised to a higher energy level and effectively made immortal. (She thought it would be fun and instructive to actually answer a prayer, once in a while. The immortal and transcendent Malaclypse is the result.) He is philosophically trying to make the best of the Goddess's gift, some three thousand years after he should have died at the siege of Troy.
She then reinvented herself as Carlotta, married into the von Überwalds, and thought that Malachite would be out of the picture, until Jasper Horst helped Malachite escape to slow down Carlotta on her search for the Tsortese Falchion.
Makepeace Thomas Bounder, "the Poet of the Cabbages", wrote more than two thousand poems, mostly in praise of the sturdy winter vegetables that have made the Sto Plains famous. He was a tireless promoter of the cabbage as a foodstuff, a fabric, and for other purposes, but he was strongly opposed to the potato, which he regarded as unwholesome and debilitating, feelings that were made clear in a pamphlet he produced entitled A Fulmination Against the Hellish Root. Bounder is well remembered by many Rimward of the Circle Sea as "some old guy" and "right, the wossname from erm..."

His poems included:
* "Cabbages"
* "Ode to a Carrot Weighing Three Pounds, Four and One Quarter Ounces, Upon the Making of a Necessary Stew"
* "Oh, Parsnips!"

Bounder wrote steadily until his death; when the tragic explosion took his life he had just begun a piece entitled "On First Looking Into a Five-Year-Old Barrel of My Best Pickled Cabbage".

:They cut you up, my Mum and Dad
:They do not want to, but they do,
:For all the turnips have gone bad,
:And we must Make a Stew of You...

The mother of Nobby Nobbs. The only other things known with any certainty about her are that she makes a remarkable Distressed Pudding and can do amazing things with cheese.

Although by some strange power known only to witches, at some point there must have been some personal contact between her and Nanny Ogg, otherwise Maisie's recipes for Distressed Pudding and Jammy Dodgers would not have been gifted to an appreciative world through the medium of Nanny Ogg's Cookbook. In fact, Nanny, no mean cook herself, is very appreciative of Maisie's talent with stodgy desserts:-

Mrs Nobbs is a mistress of all those dishes that make you think of fog and coal smoke - like Wet Nellies, Tuppeny Uprights, Treacle Billy, Jammy Devils and Distressed Pudding. They fills you up and keeps the cold out. That's what they're made for. You've got to be posh to worry about healthy eating.

Nanny Ogg would not give a personal endorsement without sampling the fare, surely?

This contact between Nanny Ogg and Maisie Nobbs is perhaps one of those million-and-one stories from the Big City of Ankh-Morpork which is yet to be told.

Interestingly enough, the relevant recipe for Distressed Pudding on page 63 of Nanny Ogg's Cookbook is illustrated by a sketch of a slightly built, benign, elderly lady in shawl and mob-cap, proferring a steaming bowl of pudding. Paul Kidby's sketch shows her standing in front of a mantlepiece on which there are a row of framed iconographs. To her immediate right is one of a person recognisable as Sconner Nobbs. To her immediate left is the unmistakeable portrait of Nobby Nobbs. Now the number of women who might want an iconograph of Nobby, still less to go to the trouble of framing it, is vanishingly small. As the lady in the picture is clearly not Tawneee, we have to assume in context that it must be Maisie.

The other two pictures are baffling. To the right of the iconograph of Sconner, we see, or rather glimpse, an iconograph in which there are five indistinct faces. (But there are only four named people in the Nobbs family? Sconner, Maisie, Errol and Nobby. So who is the fifth Nobbs?)

And to the left of Nobby's iconograph is a portrait of an attractive young woman which is clearly out of place in the Nobbs family gallery. Who is she? She's too dressed to be Tawneee...
Samuel Vimes was born in Cockbill Street, the Shades, Ankh-Morpork, and went to the local school, where he even was blackboard monitor. After that, he spent some time in street gangs, then signed in the Night Watch, shortly before the birth of the Glorious People's Republic of Treacle Mine Road during the Ankh-Morpork Civil War. He then made his way to the top, and was Captain when the Night Watch consisted of four people: him, Sergeant Colon, Corporal Nobbs, and newly appointed Constable Carrot. It is at this time that the Watch began to grow again, and Vimes was made Commander. <small>more</small>

Some people on the central continent think of themselves as the most important people in the world, so they never bothered to give their own continent a name. It is simply The Continent. For the purposes of clarity, The Discworld Companion and various official websites and adverts in English list this continent as "The (Unnamed) Continent"; it is also sometimes listed as "The Nameless Continent" or "the Central Continent".

It stretches from Hergen and Gonim turnwise to Kythia widdershins and from Ecalpon {over the hub and close to the Wall of the Agatean Empire} to Brindisi rimward.<BR>
The main continent contains regions known as:
*The Hub
*The Octarine Grass Country
*The Ramtops
*The Sto Plains
*Überwald
*The fringes, including those mentioned above, and NoThingfjord, Genua, and others.

Separated from the Counterweight continent semi-permannt ice flows and frozen sea by Ecalpon, the continent is geologically contiguous with the continent of Klatch. However people always think of that as a separate continent, much as Europe and Asia are often thought of as separate continents on the Roundworld. The main continent and the Klatchian continent together almost landlock the Circle Sea.
November 13th 2010:-

Sir Terry Pratchett has disclosed that he drinks “enormously” to help him in his fight against Alzheimer’s.

"I keep pointing out to Roy that brandy is in the British Pharmacopoeia,” Sir Terry told The Times magazine. “So are stout and sherry, I believe. I drink enormously. It makes you feel better and feeling better is part of it.”

Prof Jones has indulged the author’s habit: “Alcohol, moderate alcohol, is one of the things we would probably recommend for people in this situation.

“In general, what’s good for the heart is good for the brain.”

This is a spin-off from SN (released in paperback on the same day) and purports to be a childrens' book by the amazing authoress Felicity Beedle. This hardback reproduces the style and production of a typical Victorian/Edwardian book for children and is even signed by the authoress To Young Sam from Felicity Beadle.

21 Jun 2012 - The Long Earth is to be released by Doubleday. This is a Roundworld-based Science Fiction novel written with Stephen Baxter. It features, again, the power of the potato.

13th October 2011 - SN is now on sale in British bookstores. The Waterstones Gold edition also sees the bonus publication, at the end of the main story, of the short story "A Collegiate Casting-Out of Devilish Devices", its first outing in permanent book form outside its original ephemeral newspaper publication and reprint on the Internet.

Television:- Feb. 2009. Terry has just completed two one-hour documentaries for the BBC in which a production team shadows him for a year while he lives with the awareness of his Alzheimers' Disease and its implications. Terry goes looking for further information on the disease, the state of research into its causes and possible cures, and into both medical and complementary treatments prescribed to arrest its spread. These should be availabe to watch via the Internet, at least for British viewers, via the BBC's website. No doubt the best bits will be loaded to YouTube for everyone else.
As it stands next to Granny Weatherwax's Ramrub Invigoratore and Passion's Philtre, this would appear to be one of those Lancre preparations that travel far and wide in return for trade goods such as bits of interestingly convoluted glass pipework for special distillations.
Magyrato was an ancestor of the de Magpyr clan of vampyres who descend on Lancre during the events of CJ. His picture was shown to Agnes Nitt by his grandson Vlad as he escorted her round Lancre Castle, which they had taken over. Half of his portrait is just blank canvas, the explanation being that Magyrato got hungry.

Annotation
Magyrato's description in the book (and his representation in the drawing here) goes right back to one of the earliest depictions of the vampire on screen: Nosferatu in the classic German silent movie of the 1920's. Just as vampires on the big screen and TV have evolved since - through the "classical" Christopher Lee presentation right through Gary Oldman's recreation of the character in the newest big screen version - the paintings in Castle Magpyr appear to show a similar sort of "evolution".

Magrat Garlick is the Queen Of Lancre, consort of H.M. King Verence II. Previously, however, she was the junior witch in the Lancre coven with Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg. She isn't much good at witching magic, despite her large collection of magical jewellery, charms, and such ordered from Ankh-Morpork. However she has shown some impressive skill, such as in Wyrd Sisters. She is a better herb-woman and pharmacist than the others (because she believes in it), and unusually literate for a Lancrastian. Her mother was Simplicity Garlick, whose mother was Araminta Garlick. Witches aren't very interested in their male forebears. Magrat is thin, with a frequently red nose and an unruly mass of frizz and split ends that still awaits a Good Hair Day.

As a witch, she tends toward research, particularly into herbs and potions, following her mentor Goodie Whemper. She inherited Goodie's cottage and practice in the village of Mad Stoat, bringing a New Age attitude to an age-old society. Magrat is a doer of good deeds and a worrier, a believer in the goodness of Nature and the psychic benefits of aromas and colors. She nurses fallen baby birds until they die and never gives up hope...but, when her husband and her country are attacked, she channels Warrior-Queen Ynci and goes out in vintage armor to commit mayhem as necessary. As the Queen, she tries to support Verence's ambition to modernise and democratise Lancre although she knows that the citizens have little appetite for change and less for democracy; she is a buffer between the eager King and his lackadaisical country.

The other witches sometimes refer to her as a "wet hen". Her insecurity may stem from her mother's poor spelling. (She was, of course, supposed to be Margaret.) Unfortunately, when her daughter Esmerelda was to be named she wrote very careful instructions which resulted in the proclamation of "Esmerelda Margaret Note Spelling of Lancre".

Agnes Nitt took over the cottage after Magrat moved into Lancre Castle, continuing the succession of bookish, academic witches in Mad Stoat, as opposed to Granny Weatherwax, who distrusts "book-learning" and even words.

Character Annotations
The story of "witch" Elizabeth Garlick can be read here. As most witches' names in Pratchett's books, the name is based on a real world "witch".

A magic wand is an essential item for those Witches who are Fairy godmothers.

It is similar to a Wizard's staff, except it's like a Blackberry to the staff's 3GHz laptop. The wand allows a witch to perform some powerful magic on the spot, if they know how to use it. It's main power involves turning things into other things- for instance, Lily Weatherwax uses hers to turn two snakes into human women, and Magrat uses hers to make a lot of pumpkins.

Desiderata Hollow, a good Witch and Fairy-Godmother, possessed a magic wand. Upon her death in WA, both Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg came to her cottage to try and find it, but in fact she had sent it to Magrat Garlick, with a note that she needed to go to Genua and stop a servant girl from marrying a prince. Magrat first attempts to use the wand in a collapsed Dwarf mine by wishing for something to happen. She is able to turn rocks that were covering a valuable vein of gold-bearing quartz into pumpkins. Future attempts prove that the only thing she can do with the wand is turn other things into pumpkins.

She also used it as a blunt object against the two snakes in human form (the ones created by Lily). The blow turned them back into snakes... just in time to meet a small furry animal in the corner of a room that happened to be a mongoose.

Lily Weatherwax, as the bad Fairy-Godmother, also possessed a magic wand, but was far more skilled with it's use. She used it to undo a number of changes made by Magrat that were intended to stop Ella from going to the Ball, as well as to make the two aforesaid snakes into humans.

After the Happy Ending, Granny Weatherwax asks for the wand, and promptly uses it to create flowers. She tells Magrat that the key isn't simply to wish for things to happen, but rather to work out how to make them happen.

A device that makes a very clear and theoretically uncrossable demarcation between Inside and Outside. Done with much ornate ceremony by wizards, chanting and occultism by young and impressionable wannabe-witches such as Diamanda Tockley, and by scuffing her boot around in the dust to make a rough circle by Nanny Ogg. However it's done, it needs to be pretty good to keep all the serious magic inside and have none of the effects get to the outside. Anyone inside the circle is fair game for whatever turns up.

Used by practitioners of magic and by demonology hackers such as Eric to provide a space in which humans may safely interact with Supernatural Entities.

A Magic Circle has also been used creatively, ie to allow Rincewind and Eric to remain in exactly the same place while aeons, or maybe even Ians, of time and evolution pass by on the other side of a very thin chalk line. This also allows them to evade the personal attentions of a very irritated King of the Demons called Astfgl.

Magic Circles are generally drawn as circles, although for Wizardly purposes, such as for the Death-summoning Rite of AshkEnte, they are drawn as a regular octagram.

A method of magical transportation favoured in Klatch.

Where Hubwards magical practitioners favour the Broomstick, the carpet is the preferred means of mobility Rimwards of the Circle Sea.

It is in all probability more comfortable, so long as the rider can forget that all that stands between them and a speedy downwards plummet is a quarter of an inch of woven wool plus underlay.

It is vitally important to pay attention to certain fundamental details of laminar and spatial arrangements, or the thing will not work as expected.

In non-wizard talk, this means do not lay it out upside-down.

If charged with the correct magic, non-wizards may use them. Gulli, Gulli and Beti (the Patrician, Fred Colon and Nobby Nobbs) hijack a magic carpet, when all speed is required to get the Patrician to the correct place in time to surrender Ankh-Morpork's army. Fred Colon is uncomfortably aware he's sitting on the threadbare area that has worn right through: fortunately the carpet is a sturdy one.

Earlier in J, it is learnt that the Klatchian Embassy in Ankh-Morpork uses magic carpets for swift communication with the homeland: evidently these carry Corps Diplomatiques insignia.

Just after the first humans appeared on the Disc, wizards looked at their situation and said "bugger this". They blamed the Gods and waged war against them, using the magic lying around. They lost, and the Gods quickly made sure smaller and less powerful humans lived upon the Disc.

In the time of the Mage Wars, magic on the disc was generally much newer and more powerful than it is in the time of the Discworld Books. In this period of Wild Magic, it seems that any entity that had a penchant for gaining power could harness the plentiful and powerful Wild Magic. Early Mages could and would build entire structures out of pure magic, citadels of power as monuments to themselves. Other creatures, notably Noble dragons, Gods, and the Ice Giants, would make extensive use of the plentiful power. Envy and greed soon caused the powerful entities to turn on one another, forming alliances and then betraying them while using the Wild Magic to attack each other as well as providing formidable defenses against similar attack. The resulting period of outright and total chaos and war caused the very geography of the Disc to be altered. Even today, areas of the Disc show the scars and after-effects of the magical war.

But the Wild Magic wasn't truly limitless; only a few sources that were able to actually create new magic existed, and some of these (especially The Sourcerers; eighth sons of powerful wizards, who were themselves eighth sons) were the center of some of the most intense fighting. Although Sourcerers were a formidable beings, they were not actually immortal, and the endless attacks upon them inevitably caused their demise. It is well understood that the Gods played a role in the removal of sources of new magic, but it is unclear how (or if) the admittedly fractious Gods worked together to achieve this end.

With the number of sources of new magic dwindling, the power began to dwindle. The Wild Magic became tame, recycled until it was but a shadow of its former might. The remaining Wizards formed the Unseen University, originally an institution for the teaching of magic, but later devoted to learning how NOT to use magic, lest the remaining power become even more watered down.
Much of the Lore of Magic espoused by the UU is a direct result of the terrible Mage Wars. For example, the tradition that Wizards remain celibate is given the overt reason that sex somehow reduces a Wizard's magical prowess, but is really because the rise of a new Sourcerer is still possible, but the resultant influx of Wild Magic into the world and resultant magical warfare is too terrible to contemplate.

Some magical materials, like Sapient pearwood, owe their existence to the Mage Wars; they are found in places where early spells hit. These areas make reality change - Rincewind realises that they are in one in the COM when he flips seven coins; four land on edge and one turns into a caterpillar. The residual Magic in such areas causes the local flora, fauna and sometimes even the stones to have concentrations of still-powerful magic. This means that such materials are in high demand by Wizards, and artifacts made of them can be quite powerful indeed. However, the results can be unpredictable; The Luggage, which is made from Sapient Pearwood is a good example.

A new phenomenon to the disc, these are crudely printed woodblock broadsheets produced in Ankh-Morpork, all at the same address. Nothing is known about the company concerned but there is a distinct possibility that the name C.M.O.T. Dibbler is involved.

Some specialist hobby magazines are self-published by enthusiasts, such as those catering for the pin-collecting craze.

There are also religious polemics such as Unadorned Facts, published by the Omnian religion and faithfully distributed door-to-door by missionary workers such as Constable Visit of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch.

The generally shoddy quality of Disc magazines seems about to take a long-needed step upwards. As a sideline from newspaper publishing, the Ankh-Morpork Times seems poised to start publishing specialist magazines, one named example being The Lady's Home Companion, editress Sacharissa Cripslock. With the advent of reliable colour reproduction, a new phenomena has arrived on the Disc: soft-core erotica of the Girls, Giggles and Garters persuasion. This is an unintended side-effect of the Times' press-dwarves discovering the technology to make reproduction of colour iconographs reliably, and fairly speedily and quickly. No doubt, with their flair for business, Boddony and Goodmountain have entered a pragmatic arrangement with outside publishers to print anything to order - including G,G&G - so as to minimise down-time in between print runs of the times.

Magazines known on the Disc include:
*Unadorned Facts
Of course, with the burgeoning craze for stamps, it could be the case that many of the pin-related magazines are now defunct for lack of readership...

Possible titles discussed by William de Worde and Sacharissa Cripslock:-

When Moist von Lipwig goes into Dave's Pin Exchange to look for a copy of Total Pins, in order to find the right levers to allow him to get a grip on the mind of Stanley, so as to to get one of the postmen on his side, a comic exchange ensues. This is reminiscent of those classic comedy sketches which depend on the funny man going through an extensive catalogue of products, for the benefit of the straight man. Think of Mel Smith's Geordie barman in Not the Nine O'Clock News, who when asked for "a pint of lager" by Gryff Rhys Jones, takes so long to go through all the available choices (forty or fifty increasingly improbably named lagers, served via bottle, glass, or aerosol) that the Time bell rings, and the hapless Jones doesn't get a drink at all.

Or consider Michael Palin going through all the cheeses that aren't in stock, to an increasingly exasperated John Cleese... so it is with Pinhead Dave, listing all the available pin-fanciers' magazines at such length that Moist drifts off, somewhat concussed, in the middle of the recitation.

On all days except Thursdays, she exerts such discipline as she still can for a handful of old clients who turn up mainly out of habit or because they need a chat.

On Thursdays, Madame Tracy Draws Back the Veil with the asistance of her spirit guide Geronimo, who she fondly believes is the discarnate spirit of a wise and compassionate spiritually evolved North American Indian. Newton Pulsifer knows she is correct about the North American Indian part, yes, but privately considers she could have done some less sketchy research.

Shadwell tends to hammer on the walls during her seances, as he considers spiritualism is one dangerous step too close to actual witchcraft (why else does the Holy Bible call a spirit medium the Witch of Endor, hey? (Samuel, chapter 28:4–25) And Holy Scripture is never wrong, especially when it commands us not to suffer a witch to live! (Exodus 22:18)) and it affronts his Witchfinder's soul. Tracy doesn't mind this, as it gives her seances an air of added realism.

Ths clash of lifestyles and the applied theology resulting from it can be found in GO.

Why Lady de Meserole should want to live in the fringes of the Shades is a mystery. Perhaps here, she is near to the beating proletarian heart of the city, and is uniquely placed to warn her nephew if it ever misses a beat? It would also be a discreet and deniable place for a network of informers and agents to deposit reports, in exchange for hard cash - such people would be noticed at the Palace.

This is a location in NW, when "John Keel" is knocked unconscious, brought here by night, and interogated by Madam. On being allowed to leave, he knows instantly where he is by the feel of the street under his feet.

Mad Hamish is the oldest member of the Silver Horde. He lives in a wheelchair with terrifying spikes and has a horned helm. He is usually draped under layers of fur blankets, but underneath all the fur he has swords and other favorite weapons for the barbarian heroes. Favorite phrase: "Whut? Whut?" He is very deaf. He also tends to talk in a sort of old dialect. He is also known to have once been married to Pamdar the Witch Queen (who now runs Pam's Pantry).

Hamish has, apparently, been where the sun don't shine. During his life, he took part in many battles, usually on the side of "being paid money to fight". He once ate legs during a siege. Despite the fact that he lives in a wheelchair and spends most of his time napping, Hamish has threatened to "knock any man doon as tells me a'm dead!" and seems quite capable of carrying out the threat. Waking him up from one of his naps makes him grouchy, and is therefore to be avoided.

Went with Cohen and the others to Dunmanifestin, home of the Gods to return fire to them in the shape of a bloody big bomb. Presumed dead when they created a sizable crater following a glory-charge to right their misdeeds. Although, seeing as they hijacked some horses off a bunch of Valkyries and escaped into the air, are they alive, dead or in-between? No-one knows, but Mad Hamish still swears he'll kill anyone as tells him he's dead. While the Uncertainty Principle forbids any definitive statement as to whether or not the Silver Horde are now collectively deceased, observant readers of TLH will note that Hamish, at this point, not only gets out of his wheelchair unaided, he is suddenly capable of mounting and riding a horse, leaving the wreck of the chair behind for Evil Lord Harry and the minstrel to find, as a thing no longer required. As certain conventions must be followed re: wheeled carriages at times of death and destruction, a single wheel is still forlornly spinning on its axle...

Hamish appears in Interesting Times and The Last Hero.

Ma put in a special appearance at the Tower of Teeth which explicitly drew on one's worst fears to terrorise intruders. For both Lilywhite boys this was most definitely their Ma who appears to scare the life out of them, Banjo for playing with girls and Dave for not looking after him properly. It is this that makes him lose his mind.

Annotation
On Roundworld the "Lilywhite Boys" are part of Green_Grow_the_Rushes,_O, a folk song popular across the English speaking world. This is cumulative in structure, with each verse built up from the previous verse by appending a new stanza.
In entirety it goes:

:I'll sing you twelve, O
:Green grow the rushes, O
:What are your twelve, O?
:Twelve for the twelve Apostles
:Eleven for the eleven who went to heaven,
:Ten for the ten commandments,
:Nine for the nine bright shiners,
:Eight for the April Rainers,
:Seven for the seven stars in the sky,
:Six for the six brown walkers,
:Five for the symbols at your door,
:Four for the Gospel makers,
:Three, three, the rivals, oy!
:Two, two, the lily-white boys,
:All dressed up in green, Ho ho
:One is one and all alone
:And evermore shall be so.

There are differing explanations for the symbology of the Lily-White Boys. These are the most common:

The two remain obscure. Jesus and John the Baptist have been suggested, as have the holly and the ivy (although the holly berry is red and the ivy berry is black, both have white wood and are evergreen). Pagan tradition also has the holly and the ivy as male and female[citation needed], so they are not both "boys". The two may, instead, be holly and mistletoe (which has white berries with green branches), which would align more closely with the tradition of the defeat at Yule of the Holly King by the Oak King (mistletoe 'traditionally' grows on oak trees, although it will grow on other types of tree). Robert Graves, indeed, suggested that they are the Holly King and Oak King. There is also some suggestion that the two may be the Old and New Testaments, perhaps referring to some mediaeval tradition, although "All dressed up in green" strongly suggests that the two "boys" were in some way connected with the growth of plants.

Another explanation is that the statues of St John and Our Lady which, in Christian Churches, flank the Crucifix on the Altar reredos or the Rood screen were, during Holy Week, bound with rushes to cover them. (During Holy Week, from Palm Sunday until Easter Day, all statues, crosses, and crucifixes are traditionally covered from view, and all flowers are removed from the Church)[citation needed]. The two figures were portrayed in similar garments, hence "lily-white boys", and wrapped in rushes they were "All dressed up in green".

The phrase could also allude to an ancient ritual of painting two people from a village white and sending them off to die, thereby cleansing the village of its sins[citation needed]. The verse has also been changed to "lily-white doves" in some interpretations of the songs in reference to Noah's Ark.

One other explanation is that the boys referred to are the twins Castor and Pollux, both of whom appear in Greek mythology. As the constellation of Gemini is named after them, this would provide yet another astronomical reference to the many already present in the song.

Twelve years old, dark skinned and with teeth sharpened to points (because his tribe like the look of it), he can easily count elephants, especially when you only have three.

His boss thinks of him as merely a 'mobile smile', so when an order comes in for a thousand elephants (during the events of Moving Pictures), Azhural is surprised to find that the kid has the mind of a skilled kilopachydermatologist. Together they wrangle in several relatives and scores of elephants, and trek over a thousand miles across mountains, through forests and across ravines.

Unfortunately this great adventure was ultimately for naught; the elephants were no longer needed (and could no longer be paid for) by the time they arrived at Ankh-Morpork. Nothing is said of what happened next, but it is almost certain that the elephants had to be marched all the way back home again, and no compensation was given.

Annotation
Hannibal was the Roundworld guy who liked to force elephants into as many battleplans as he could. He even took elephants over mountain ranges, although he didn't use giant sleds.
