Cover Blurb
"Football has come to the ancient city of Ankh-Morpork – not the old fashioned, grubby pushing and shoving, but the new, fast football with pointy hats for goalposts and balls that go gloing when you drop them. And now, the wizards of Unseen University must win a football match, without using magic, so they're in the mood for trying everything else.

The prospect of the Big Match draws in a likely lad with a wonderful talent for kicking a tin can, a maker of jolly good pies, a dim but beautiful young woman who might just turn out to be the greatest fashion model there has ever been, and the mysterious Mr Nutt. (No one knows anything much about Mr Nutt, not even Mr Nutt, which worries him, too.)

As the match approaches, four lives are entangled and changed for ever.
Because the thing about football – the important thing about football – is that it is not just about football.

Roundworld comparisons
That Shakespeare wrote a Romeo and Juliet, Italy. This Discworld story centers on horny teenagers (well, not Glenda) who are fans of different foot-the-ball sides, but then again it doesn't.
The name Dimwell seems close to Millwall, area and football club in London noted for the belligerence of their supporters.
Uberwald is a roundworld reference to Germany. The orcs are symbolic for modern Germans. All books that Nutt cites have German titles. Today, Germans have problems with their place in history, because of their role in the war, just like the orcs, even several generations afterwards. Uberwald actually translates as over the forest as does Transylvania. The books have German titles because Freud is the father of psychology.
Too many links
Is it just me, or is it completey useless to have even the years be actual Wiki links? Is anybody going to go: "Hmmm, Mort was published in 1987, and -- oh wait, let me see what Wikipedia has to tell me about the year 1987"?

Linking just-because-you-can is merely screen pollution and only causes the truly useful links to become obscured. An abundance of choices is not always helpful.

This is of course a problem I have with Wikipedia in general. Most articles these days are more blue than black, simply because every friggin' word for which an article exists gets. 11:20, 4 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Blurbs
I'd just like to say that most of the blurbs here, I assume they are from the UK editions, are different from the US ones and, ye gods, the blurbs I read here are fun, so much more fun than the US ones. Also the UK blurbs are more Discworld-ly, whereas the US ones seem to try to generalize things, squish too much information in a few words, and end up implying the wrong thing. For example, the US blurb for Feet of Clay ends with the sentence "Even when the investigation leads to an out-of-work golem, a vampire dragon, and a vegetarian werewolf...."; however, in the book the vegetarian werewolf is a member of the investigation team, not something that the investigation finds, and the investigation hardly ever led to the vampire named dragon. US blurbs also include weird mistakes, like "Even when one of the victims is murdered with a loaf of her own Battle Bread (available in convenient throwing slices)." for Feet of Clay. I can understand the attempt to squish the commercial dwarf bread with the dwarf bread museum, but they used a female pronoun on poor old Mr. Hopkinson... -- Vsl

Multiple Editions?
The (old) Discworld Companion seems to have multiple editions without changing the names. My copy is the "Updated" 2001 version, so on the copyright page I see that first edition was 1994, and my copy was 2001. On some bookseller websites I keep seeing people saying they are selling used copies of 1997 edition. Is there really a 1997 edition? If not, please correct it on the Bibliography page.--Vsl 01:28, 1 February 2006 (CET)
:There are mainly 3 different editions (1994, 1997 and 2003), but the paperback release of the first hardback edition has an updated introduction, too. You can have a look at them in the database I created here. It lists all editions that were released in the UK and in Germany. == Diaries and such ==

Where do the 6 diaries, the almanack, the Pratchett Portfolio, the Art of the Discword and the forthcoming 2007 diary come into this list, if at all? Also, I listed Making Money because of its announcement on Paul Kidby's website, but what of Nation, Unseen Academicals and Scouting for Trolls, which as far as I know haven't had an announcement as such, they were just inferred from interviews. Do they belong in the list? Thegreatloofa 18:33, 8 February 2006 (CET)

-A good point. Also I was wondering if Discworld sources supervised but not actually written by TP should be included in the bibliography or even the individual articles. I am thinking specifically about the PC game 'Discworld Noir' which has lots of interesting facts if it is appropriate to include them. --High_king_gilgalad 18:15, 12 April 2006 (GMT)
Is there a place for listing, or discussing, audio adaptions of the books?
I ask, because I bought a copy of the "talking book" edition of T5E at the weekend. It is abridged onto two C90 audio cassettes, and read by Tony Robinson, a man best known for playing Blackadder's sidekick Baldrick. This seems to be about the only release format of Pratchett's books that doesn't have its own separate section in the bibliography. (As those books so far released all appear to be in the same format and are all audiotape editions read by Robinson, it's arguable that this doesn't need too much attention, over and above an acknowledgment that they exist?) I've dealt with the specifics of this particular adaptation in more depth in the discussion pages of T5E.--AgProv 17:08, 15 January 2008 (CET)

:I've tried to list all of Stephen Briggs's on his page despite the barriers erected by the publishers; they can be copied and pasted here. By all means dig out Robinson's if you can and just add a section. I think there are older recordings by another reader as well. --Old Dickens 22:39, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
Numbering Sequence: advice sought
Ref. the soon-to-be-released fully illustrated version of WFM. I have inserted it into the list at no.39, which has necessitated re-numbering the subsequent three working titles.

It occurs to me, however, that both E and TLH were originally released as fully illustrated books, and in later editions as text-only volumes. (ie, two releases of the same text, but one eidtion lacks pictures) They each only appear once in the list, however, by chronological release date. Therefore, should WFM be similarly treated, perhaps with a note after it first appears as no.31 in the list, to say it will soon be available in a fully illustrated edition, while (When I Am Old) I Shall Wear Midnight, Unseen Academicals and Raising Taxes retain their previous positions at 39, 40, and 41 respectively?

Also, I listed Making Money because of its announcement on Paul Kidby's website, but what of Nation, Unseen Academicals and Scouting for Trolls, which as far as I know haven't had an announcement as such, they were just inferred from interviews. == Is there a place for listing, or discussing, audio adaptions of the books? ==

== Numbering Sequence: advice sought ==

Ref. the soon-to-be-released fully illustrated version of WFM.

In TOT we discover the species has an ability to manipulate time, and have been extincy three times. So presumably the two specimens encountered in MP learnt from what would otherwise have been a terminal encounter with a thousand elephants on bobsleighs - presumably they were able to pause and rewind, to a point where they could decide to be in a place where a thousand elephants on bobsleighs weren't. The Yeti's time manipulation is quite similar to the "save game" feature of video games on Earth. The Yeti is able to save its time at a certain point, and then venture forth knowing that if it dies, it can just resume its life from the point it saved at with the knowledge it acquired before death. It is effectively a highly evolved, albeit slightly painful form of foretelling. It is possible- as demonstrated by Lu-Tze- to learn how to do this without evolving it naturally, but given the difficulty involved in this method of survival when it isn't built in the person attempting it would have to be truly desperate to attempt such an action.
Apparently, like Skund, it moves around a bit and is impossible to precisely pin down. Current wisdom enshrined in CDA is that it is Hubwards of Llamedos and neighbours Hergen and has allowed formerly landlocked Llamedos (which in the time of The Discworld Mapp was inland) access to the coast and for Pant-y-Girdl to become a significant seaport. CDA notes "the mist makes it hard to tell for sure" where Chimeria begins and ends, and notes that Sealy Bay is notorious for shipwrecks of vessels disorientated by fog and mist. The borders are "ill-defined" and the prevailing foggy gloom makes surveying well-nigh impossible. the language appears to be Llamedosian or something related, as the country has male-vocie choirs which are a hit at Eisteiddfods.

Full name: Her Grace, Lady Sybil Deirdre Olgivanna Ramkin-Vimes, The Duchess of Ankh. Lady Sybil is the last scion of one of the oldest clans of the Ankh nobility, the Ramkins (while there are still a few of the old noble families around, there are also many new nobility, civic figures given Lord titles by the Patricians down the ages).

Like many other old noble families, the Ramkins are hard-headed, and never shirk a battle when Ankh-Morpork calls. Nor indeed in other circumstances: when Samuel Vimes is flung thirty years into the past in NW, he only becomes fully aware of the reality of the situation when he returns to a "home," which in that place and time is not his. After punching the butler, he is forced to retreat by a determined-but-then-much-younger Sybil, who makes a very-determined attempt to disembowel him with a broadsword. This is a character trait in Sybil: right from her first appearance, chronologically speaking, it is clear that she won't shirk from a fight in defence of things she loves. (It also means the ungallant can conjecture that at the time of Young Sam's birth, she is 46 years old, contrived from the notion that during the time travel in NW the then-young Vimes is 16 and the then-young Sybil is also, as stated, 16, making her the same age as Vimes.

In appearance Lady Sybil is a plus-sized woman with a strong build, as depicted at Deviant Art: Sybil Ramkin by Persian-Pirate. Lady Sybil is about 40 years old when she first meets Captain Vimes in and very active in lifestyle, especially concerning herself with swamp dragon care and breeding. Due to the fire hazards associated with swamp dragons, Lady Sybil shaves her head and wear a wig. At social events she is depicted gowned in blue with masses of chestnut hair. She wears the expensive perfume "captivation" on special occasions. In private, she is often seen wearing a modest chestnut wig with leather armors, rubber boots, and thick gloves, as she works with the dragons.

Ramkin Residence: Sybil lives primarily at Ramkin House, in the hills on Scoone Avenue, "a wide, tree-lined, incredibly select part of Ankh. The house commands an outcrop that gives it a magnificent view of the city." (see ). Ramkin House has generous grounds that include dragon pens. Occasionally she visits the ancestral pile, Ramkin Hall, commonly referred to as Crundells, a large estate in the Quirm countryside (see SN).

Lady Sybil is a leader in dragon care and breeding, shown in the illustration Lady Sybil by NestDaria. The scene captures the duchess caring for sick swamp dragons, although she may look a bit too tidy. Sybil is one of the notable breeders of swamp dragons, along with such contemporaries as Brenda Rodley, the Dowager Duchess of Quirm. Her city home includes a penhouse for the small dragons. She is also founder of the Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons, located in Ankh-Morpork. To her, the murder of a swamp dragon is equivalent to the murder of a human or other accepted humanoid citizen.

Lady Sybil is the richest woman in the city of Ankh-Morpork. It is possible that she is the richest person (regardless of gender) in Ankh-Morpork. She owns approximately a tenth of uptown Ankh, and extensive properties in Morpork. The Assassins' Guild, for example, pays rent to her for their grand Guild house.

Despite her wealth and lineage, Lady Sybil is also one of the more sensible, more gracious, more accepting (of changing times and ethnic diversity and so on), less arrogant, and less snobby among the nobles of the Sto Plains. Sybil may use class/nobility/etc., but she doesn't actually believe in it. Her life reflects genuine appreciation of all living, striving beings: Not only does Sybil befriend the varied characters in the City Watch, she also speaks dwarfish (), sings a famous dwarven ballad (TFE) and moves mountains to help goblins (SN).

Lady Sybil maintains an extensive correspondence list; her Hogswatch card list is in two volumes. She was at school with Angua's mother, Serafine von Überwald and regularly sent her letters. This is believed to have been discontinued following the attempt on Samuel Vimes's life by the Überwald werewolves in TFE. This wasn't so much the murder attempt as the fact that at the time, Lady Sybil was effectively kept prisoner by her old schoolfriend, who lied to her that she had no knowledge of what was going on. If there is something Lady Sybil cannot abide, it's this sort of dishonesty. (Let alone the fact that Serafine violated the sacred bonds of trust between the Ladies who Organise). It is also a safe bet that Serafine has been struck off the Hogswatch card list and blackballed by everyone who was with her back in Form 3b.

While at at school she excelled at geometry under the tuition of her maths teacher Miss Turpitude. This knack surely proved of great help in one of her youthful art projects, creating a pantograph that would prove crucial to events in .

Lady Sybil gave the building in Pseudopolis Yard to the Night Watch. It is now the headquarters of the modern Ankh-Morpork City Watch.

MARRIED LIFE:

Before she met her husband Samuel Vimes, (then Captain of the Night Watch division of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch), Lady Sybil spent all her time on dragons and seldom attended social parties. Her mansion was very dilapidated, her gardens were a mess of ivies over statues of old Ramkins, there were few servants, and she cooked her own meals and lived in only a few rooms in the large mansion. After marrying Vimes, Lady Sybil became active in society again because she considers that Vimes is truly a gentle man, (not a gentleman,) a good man who deserves better things in life. Lady Sybil is not arrogant, so there are quite a few nobles that she considers to be 'very silly', but she still dines with them and writes to them.

When they first married, Lady Sybil's husband was merely Captain Vimes or Mr. Vimes. During their marriage, Lady Sybil became the wife of Commander Vimes, Sir Samuel Vimes, Knight, and finally, after promotion by the Patrician Lord Havelock Vetinari — a promotion suggested by Carrot — The Duke of Ankh, which made Sybil the Duchess. Vimes loves her very much, but it irks him when she is mentioned as the Duchess of Ankh, because that's due to him being the Duke of Ankh, and he doesn't like being a Duke. He accepted the title for her sake, so she can spit in the eye of anyone -- even the Duchess of Quirm, if she likes (see J).

After a dangerously laborious labor (she was about 46 years old), the Duchess of Ankh gave birth to Young Sam, thanks to the professional attentions of one Dr. J. "Mossy" Lawn. In gratitude Vimes gave Dr. Lawn the freehold of a large corner site near Goose Gate, in addition to a large sum of money. The site is now the Lady Sybil Free Hospital, with Dr. Lawn as the head physician.

Sybil is devoted to her family. She knits her husband's socks and cooks his meals because she thinks that is what a good wife does, and Sam loves the extra crispy bits and wouldn't dream of telling her the stockings are lumpy. She monitors Sam's diet, ensuring that his BLT sandwiches include generous portions of lettuce and tomato. Sybil is a loving mother to Young Sam and allows him to develop his own interests. Although she can be fiercely protective when needed, she doesn't smother her son or hide him away from the world. This fan-art captures a tender scene from when the family is home: Sybil and Her Sams by La-Chapeliere-Folle.

At the end of RS young Sam is about eight years old. His mother is planning a vacation for the family:
"When they have the line to Uberwald running, I’d love to go to visit the Queen, and most of all I’d like a holiday by the train. And young Sam’s mad about trains, you know. He’s nearly filled up his first notebook already.” “Well,” said Vimes, “you know if I have a holiday I walk into a crime.” Lady Sybil finished her egg and said, “Jolly good, dear, you’ll like that.”

1 At Crundells, however, the family motto is "What We Have We Keep". No Latatian is given: perhaps Quis Habemus Servamus.
