After all, Tolkien's lawyers took on the Dungeons and Dragons people and made them re-write all the rulebooks and guides, in a way that omitted any mention at all, anywhere, of the word h*bb*t, which was held to be the exclusive intellectual property of the estate of J.R.R. Tolkein. Apparently, "halfling" was an adequate replacement...

Ah, beaten to it... I was about to say that opinion is divided on this point and two equally plausible explanations for the Red Eye are given on the Annotations page for Going Postal.
